Hi all

Just like to get some opinions before I go writing furious letters Angry

My 6 year old when on a school trip to the Zoo today to watch a nativity type animal show.
It was 0 degrees but we were advised the trip would still be going ahead, despite the weather.

She was well wrapped up, two layers of everything, hat scarf gloves and ear muffs.

She came home (early!) with wet feet and freezing cold saying she had stood outside and walked around all day despite crying (along with nine of the other girls and two boys) and asking to go inside.

The class trip then came home an hour early, which just added further to her upset as I wasn't able to pick her up.
Do I make a complaint that they were kept outside for most of the trip??

I understand it was a zoo trip, and the weather was unexpected, but if a quarter of the class are crying due to cold (and my daughter doesn't have a tendency to make things up and is pretty honest), would a school normally continue with the trip???

I didn't get chance to speak to other parents as my daughter was one of the few left at the end of the day, so didn't get chance to check the stories out.

What would you do in this instance?????

Thanks all

Ach well, I still think it is madness and I'm from Scotland were we are well 'ard when it comes to weather. I guess I'm becoming more French than I thought.

Perhaps also because my DD is asthmatic, I know she would come home from a day like that with a runny nose that would turn into a chest infection and much worry for us.

Our school gives specific instructions of what children should have/wear on school trips.

Still I can't see them insisting that everybody be kitted out with thermals and ski wear just because the school wanted to take kids to the zoo in the winter.

And we are the sort who walk to school in all weathers and wear jumpers rather than put the heating on.

Hi - update - my daughter went on her zoo trip yesterday and her teacher said it was a bit too cold really and some kids were crying - that they tried to keep warm as much as possible. Anyway, dd seems kinds of unscathed though she did say her feet were cold (tights, thermal socks, wellies, did try to get snow boots but was too late). Think kids probably had fun overall but probably would have been better not to go. Difficult to disappoint kids and change plans at last minute though.

What horrible thing happened at Alton Towers? Please don't tell me somebody got really hurt or died Sad.

I think it was the coach that crashed en route and two teenagers were killed.

How utterly awful. Poor girl. I do think we place too much trust in "authorities" sometimes - as if the mere fact that somebody else is letting a trip go ahead (the one to Alton Towers) when the roads are so icy and there are blizzards, means that no accident will take place.

It's very sad but I wonder if all the people complaining about schools closing for the weather worry that the same could easily happen on the journey to school.
