school plays - ticket limitations!

How many people are allowed to go to your children's school plays?

We have just been told that this year we are only allowed 2 tickets per family due to health and safety reasons! The 2 plays are on twice.

So no Grannies etc, everyone in outrage as you can imagine. Siblings are ok if they sit on your lap which kind of defeats the H&S argument to my mind?

DDs primary school allowed 2 tickets per family for each performance (nativity 2, yr6 musical 3), and you could also go on a waiting list for extras(as obv not everyone took all their allowance). So this allowed for parents and grandparents quite easily

pointydog · 30/11/2010 18:40

2 tickets per child, H&S yes. Par for the course I'm afraid.

clam · 30/11/2010 18:41

gremlin, what do you suggest? What are the school supposed to do?

Goingspare · 30/11/2010 18:46

3 performances here - morning, afternoon and evening (poor children). Max. 2 tickets for the evening.

ProfYaffle · 30/11/2010 18:54

2 tickets here too although there is a complex additional ticket request system. I don't mind, the school has outgrown it's building, the hall is too small for the number of children. til they build a new one I don't see what else they can do.

What is utter pandemonium is dd2's nursery nativity with a tiny amount of space and no ticket restrictions. It's utterly miserable with PFB parents jostling, bagging chairs ("oh no, you can't sit there, the fringe of my scarf is on it, my sil is sitting there"), bringing the entourage etc etc

I know which I prefer.

Panzee · 30/11/2010 18:57

Remember the number of people allowed in the hall also includes children and staff.

magicmummy1 · 30/11/2010 18:57

It's two tickets per family at our school, including younger siblings on laps. It's a pity for grandparents etc - my mum and dad would love to have come - but fair enough if there are health and safety regulations to be considered. At dd's school, they already do three performances, so they couldn't realistically do any more!

It's fine for us really, as it's only me and DH, but I do feel for families with other children and no childcare, as it normally means that only one parent can attend. Much fairer if siblings on laps didn't count IMO, but apparently that's not acceptable for the health and safety regs. :(

We do have the option of buying extra tickets if there are any left over. I tend not to do this for grandparents, though, because I think siblings and parents should have first priority.

MummyDoIt · 30/11/2010 19:00

2 per family here too. The kids already do three performances to accommodate even that number so putting on extra performances is out of the question. Younger siblings aren't allowed too. There is an afternoon dress rehearsal and grandparents/siblings are allowed to come to that.

ragged · 30/11/2010 19:01

2 ticket limit here, too, and reputedly babies on laps need their own ticket.

We had a totally different system in the past which I think worked much better (sigh), and didn't involve tickets or explicitly limiting numbers at all.

Our 2nd performance is in evening and will only go ahead if enough parents say that their childrenare coming -- how likely do you think it is that the evening performance will happen at all?

magicmummy1 · 30/11/2010 19:10

"Our 2nd performance is in evening and will only go ahead if enough parents say that their childrenare coming -- how likely do you think it is that the evening performance will happen at all?"

Shock Do some parents not bring their children in for this sort of thing, then?! Never even occurred to me! Confused

nymphadora · 30/11/2010 19:14

2 each here. One for me & one for xh. Sometimes we can get extra for our partners and other dd. This year have to take dd3 into account so not sure what to do with her yet until we know on ticket allocation etc

LooL00 · 30/11/2010 19:30

We get 2 per family per performance and there are 2 performances. Poor dc3 (5m today) will have to try to be quiet for 1.5 hours, unfortunately she's not a comfort feeder and is an excellent raspberry blower.

Deelle · 30/11/2010 20:55

We are only allowed 2 tickets per family due to health and safety rules.

But when they hold the easter or christmas fetes in the same hall it is so packed that you literally cannot move!?!?!

Strange that this is ok but the performances are restricted?!?

Perhaps it is because we are all standing at the fetes - so we can run for the door more easily!!

But sitting at the performances we would all be falling over the chairs if we tried to run for the door?!?!?

Milliways · 30/11/2010 20:59

Ours were 2 per family, and you could request up to 2 extra if any left.

DH & I used to go on different days if poss so there would always be a smiley face around. Occassionally MIL got a spare (or DH's if he was away).

PortlyBlackSantaUpTheChimney · 30/11/2010 21:03

Ours is 2 per family - but since i have 2 children in the play that should be 4, no??? Wink

DiscoDaisy · 30/11/2010 21:04

2 per family and the school secretary marks which performance you've picked up tickets for. If there are any left then they are put up for grabs at the end of 'ticket week' on a first come basis.
Last year there was a big argument with one family as they needed 3 tickets because the 2 children had different biological dads who both naturally wanted to attend for their respective child. iyswim

Tingry · 30/11/2010 21:09

Here it's 3 tickets total per family, have 2 dcs in the play. There are 3 shows and no younger siblings allowed @ the 2 evening shows.
I've gone for 1 for the afternoon show so DD2 can come with me and then 1 for each of the evening performances so am hoping DH will go one eve and MIL the other. I would actually really like to go with DH but it's just so impractical :(

treas · 30/11/2010 21:17

Our school has 2 performances, one afternoon one and the other the following evening in the chapel up the road from the school.

School has requested that younger siblings should only go to the afternoon performance. With a view to the evening performance being an adult only audience, school appears to be arranging some sort of creche in the school hall for those who really cannot arrange child minding.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/11/2010 23:58

2 performances on consecutive afternoons. Max 3 tickets per family but can put your name on the waiting list for spares. Ideally all younger siblings go to the performance that isn't being recorded for the extortionately priced dvd
There is a limit on the number of people who can be in the hall and they are trying to avoid one family turning up with 8 people and other parents not getting in at all.

emptyshell · 01/12/2010 10:12

"Do some parents not bring their children in for this sort of thing, then?! Never even occurred to me!"

It has been known! Our narrator stood us up for the evening performance last play I was involved in - thankfully the last minute understudy given a copy of the script and begged to stand in did an utterly awesome job!

Did have a minor fit when half the class hadn't showed with 20 minutes to go till the evening performance - then they all rolled in, en-masse precisely two minutes after the end of the Simpsons.

signet · 01/12/2010 11:47

We can have 6 tickets in total. 4 for the afternoon performance and 2 for the evening. So I'll be taking grandparents in the afternoon and DH is taking DS2 in the evening. DD also gets to see it as her Y2 class (infant school) go up to the junior school to see it.

We have 4 performances. One half of each year group do an afternoon and evening and then the other half of the year group do the next afternoon and evening. Seems to work ok for everyone.

Butkin · 01/12/2010 19:04

Unlimited at ours (no tickets) and I'm taking the GPs tomorrow.

To spread the load it is only for years 1,2,3,4 and they have it on two afternoons.

The Nursery/Kindergarden do a separate one and the older ones do a choir service in the local cathedral instead.

The school hall isn't too big so they allow standing at the back for the late arrivals.

Hulababy · 01/12/2010 19:11

For the big school play (junir part of school) at the end of the year it is normal 2 tickets per child. The hall just can't take any more, even with two showings - and this is a small school too. You can put a request in for extra tickets if people return ones they don't need. We pay for them too - towards school funds.

Nativity - only infants with juniors as choir - usually open access as many of the junior parents don't go.

NoahAndTheWhale · 01/12/2010 22:03

The infant one (about 75 children) has two tickets per child and small children have to have their own ticket. I have children in Year 2 and reception so 4 tickets. Have given two to grandparents.

Performances both at 2pm and there is a DVD being recorded but we are still allowed to do our own. DVD is £6 I think

NoahAndTheWhale · 01/12/2010 22:07

Two performances by the way
