DS struggling with reading but I thought doing ok!?

To cut a long story short, DS is in Yr 1 at a pre-prep and is pretty much in the bottom group for everything.

The thing is, he's on level 7 ORT, able to write joined up writing and is telling basic time, doing tens and unit additions and can count up to 200, down from 50, can count in 2s and 5s, knows basic fractions.

Up until recently I was blissfully unaware thinking he was doing really well and not really interested in levels or what anyone else is doing.

Today I saw (on the wall in his classroom) a list of all the children with their reading levels and streams for maths and english...and he's at the bottom!

Now suddenly feeling like I need to do something to help him but the school have never said there was anything to work on?? Confused.

perk? Hmm

It's one of the reasons many send their children, so they can develop a sense of competition and how to crush those beneath you.
Plus you get bragging rights.

DS also in pre prep year 1 and I thought he is doing well, can do basic add and subtract, does kumon maths also which helpes his confidence. In the morning we do spellings and practice sentences and in the evening he does kumon maths BUT apparently he is still bottom of the class - gets six spelling while lots get twelve!!

I have given up worrying now, he is in a nice school, which is giving him extra support etc. Interestingly I showed his work to couple of state Year 1 teachers who said he would be well above average in their class.

I am not quite sure what other parents have been doing tbh, I cant see how we can do any more, and he must also have time to relax after school as well!

That is maybe the downside of preps, parents who hothouse from the age of 3 maybe? or just very bright kids who are naturally born like that? Any answers anyone? Teachers have told me that DS is bright so not sure where we are going wrong.

You can bet your bottome dollar that lots of the parents are going in pushing for little Tarquin to be moved up a level with his reading books and to be given harder sums.My SIL is like this and compiled a whole folder on why her DS3 should be moved up to the top stream a stream, hired a an Ed psych to do a report and put together a powerpoint presentation for the classteacher and head teacher.I kid you not.THAT is more likely to be the reason why your DS ( who is doing very nicely by anyones standards) is in the bottom stream

i think that he is doing great!!!!
he sounds very similar to my dd who is top of the class at her state school!!

dont worry about it as long as he is happy and learning then you have nothing to worry about.
And it is totaly ridiculus that they have a leage table of children out in full view!

I agree with snowplough. I bet some of the level 8/9/10 children are there because their parents are more pushy (interfering?) and insistent that their child is moved up.
