Hi,
Could anyone explain what are the levels expected for end of yr 1 and so on. Also how many sub levels are they expected to move up in each year. The reason I ask is I am not happy with my childs progress..she is in year 4 and was told by senco she is at level 1 and is making adequate progress. She as been on SA since starting school and I have only just found out 2 months ago about all this and all the IEP's..9 in total and only 2 evaluations filled in (without our input). What I want to know is what the average level for the beginning of yr 4 and how many sub levels a child should be achieving from yr 1/2 and 3/4. just so i can argue that she is not making enough progress and get her the help as in Ed P. Any information would really be appreciated.

amateurmum I don't think even the most vague teacher could cover up the fact a child can't read and write
Madpriest can you recall what the reported level was in Y2?

madwomanintheattic · 26/11/2010 18:48

blimey. Shock

madprest - i know you're upset, but goblin was trying to help. i'm a bit shocked you haven't realised either.

but yes, she has been let down. you need to ask the school whether they have referred her for Ed Psych assessment, and what the results were/ are/ have been... or you need to ask them for an EP referral asap. has she been tested for anything? dyslexia etc?

has she had any other special needs? poor motor skills? delayed development? has she ever been referred to a paediatrician for a developmental assessment? speech difficulties? delayed understanding? processing issues? all of these are thigns which you may have noticed yourself.

it is difficult when it is 'just' learning difficulties to know how far behind they are, and i'm bemused how she has made it to yr 4 on sa alone tbh.

i would consider contacting the head of governors or the governor responsible for sn and asking them to be present at your meeting with the ht if i were in your situation.

after the meeting you may need to decide whether the setting is right for her - if you are content that they are seeking appropriate support etc.

have they ever mentioned any 1-1/ small group help to you?

goblin - enjoy your wine - i'm not sure you'll be back on this thread, but suspect the op will be a bit Blush if she does get as far as the sn board...

mrsz - A child operating at level one in writing would be able to write, using simple words, formulaic phrases and some sentence like clauses. Often some high frequency and cvc words spelled correctly too.

I'm not suggesting that the teacher tried to cover up anything, just that teaching staff were very ineffective in communicating how significant the problem was.

Madprest · 26/11/2010 18:58

I have asked for her to be referred to Ed P but was refused out right as HT said she is not that bad. Paed said everything was okay with her (went through docs myself to see Paed). She as been receiving Lexia once a week last year and now been increased to 3 times a week. Supposed to have phonics twice a week and spelling sessions (according to latest IEP).My apologies goblin but I am being honest about bringing it up to her year 2 and 3 teachers..didn't mean to be so rude, yes I am angry more with myself tbh.

Depending whether it is a 1a or a 1c a child will be using simple words and phrases with words in order to producing some recognisable letter shapes sorry but my expectations of being able to write are higher

mrz · 26/11/2010 19:05

Madpriest Lexia is a phonics /reading support programme and can be very effective if delivered correctly but I've got to be honest a child working at level 1 needs much more.

Madprest · 26/11/2010 19:08

She can read okay if she is on a level she can cope with. Her targets for the past 4 IEPS. 3 last year are as follows which are all the same:-
To have instant recall of number bonds to 10/20
To be able to complete simple addition/subtraction using a number line
To be able to read and spell common words form Phase 4 (Letters and Sounds)
Latest IEP
To confidently complete addition/subtraction sentences using a number line.
To be able to read and spell common words from Phase 4 (Letters and Sounds)and write these correctly in independent work.
To read daily at home and at school and discuss texts to show an understanding of the story.

What level book is she confident with?

I'm afraid Phase 4 is reception but even so it is too big a target (considering they are saying small steps)

don't know much to offer advice, but I feel for you, madprest, sounds like teachers have really been fobbing you off and unwilling to be blunt about the extent of your DD's problems. hope you get somewhere with getting ed psych referral.have a look at madwoman's post of 18.48 when you have a moment, it contains some v. useful ideas.

Madprest · 26/11/2010 19:35

thank you abitw
