15-4=11 18-5-13 and so on how do we work out the multiples of ten from these are we thick because we really dont understand and finding it hard to explain to out 7 year old :-(

I don't get it either, and I'm a teacher.

Is it about adding up using number bonds to ten??????

I think they sometimes teach children like this:

27 + 8 = 27 + 3 + 5 = 30 + 5 = 30

Goblinchild · 20/11/2010 09:03

Maybe, but multiples of ten should involve 10, 20, 30 etc.
So the question doesn't make sense, I wouldn't do the homework and I'd put a note in explaining why.

Just put a note in explaining that none of you understood what that part of the homework was asking.

Posted on the other thread ! I would assume for 15-4=11 you would do 150-40=110, etc, to show similar calculations with tens multiples!

activate · 20/11/2010 09:27

that doesn't make any sense so don't do it

Goblinchild · 20/11/2010 09:29

Good guess spanieleyes, you are most likely right.
I just feel that homework shouldn't be a guessing game.

I asked my 9 year old (he's extremely good at maths and is about 3 years ahead of his age)

he doesn't get the question at all - he wonders whether it's a trick question - he says "if it is correct phrasing the teacher will say 'this girl doesn't pay attention in school'" LOL (meaning the teacher might have explained it to the children and if she can't explain it to you she wasn't listening)

but I think as a basic primary stage question if it is an add-on it's a clumsy one open to many possible interpretations but none of the making any sense

a multiple of 10 is 10,20,30,40 etc

mnistooaddictive · 20/11/2010 09:45

Maths teacher here and I don't have a clue! The teacher needs to explain it better or give an example. It may follow on from something they did in class and she expected them to remember though.

Agree with spaniel. I think it's a badly-worded attempt to get them to note the link between 13 x 4 = 52 and 130 x 4 = 520 and 13 x 40 etc....

There shouldn't be a problem with you writing that she's had a go at the main section but you were all unclear as to the meaning of the extra challenge.
