Nice versions of Greek and Roman myths?

Another book question please. My eight year old is quite into Fairy Tales at the moment so I wondered about taking the opportunity to also read him Greek and Roman myths. Does anyone know of any nice books or sets? Have got an Orchard title of each from the library, but he is not that fussed on them.

Black Sails Before Troy by Rosemary Sutcliffe is very good. I think she did a version of the Odyssey as well.

My DS is very keen on a book of Greek Myths by Marcia Williams, with comic strip type illustrations, published by Walker books. It's got all the old favourites in it. We've also got from the library small books of individual Greek myths, I think published by Orchard. They might be the ones you already have. We liked them, but not as much as the Marcia Williams one.

Ds2 is an expert of Greek myths and we've got lots of books. Let me ask him in the morning Mrs D and I'll let you know.

thebelletolls · 11/11/2010 22:33

Yup - Marcia Williams is brilliant. She is published by Walker Books. We have the Iliad and the Odyssey as well as Greek Myths.

I just got this - usborne illustrated guide to greek myths and legends for ds because I think it looks great, ds hasn't had a chance to read it yet so can't give it a proper child's recommendation...

There are some offers on marcia Williams books on thebookpeople.co.uk, she does other stuff too like shakespeare and Chaucer.

You can't beat 'Favourite Greek Myths' by L.S Hyde.

The original and the best IMO. First published in 1909 (I think!) but very readable from 8 plus .

My edition has the occasional black and white photo of classical statues. Much better than the ubiquitous jokey cartoon style illustrations!

I think you can get it on Amazon

Anything by Geraldine McCaughrean is marvellous - there's an Orchard book of Greek Myths which my son was wild about, both as a book and an audiobook.

Brilliant bumper book called Atticus the Storyteller, as well as the Marcia Williams ones.

GrimmaTheNome · 12/11/2010 09:58

We have Atticus - DD really enjoyed me reading it to her when she was about 8.

I had an Enid Blyton book - Tales of Ancient World - when I was about 7, it had a lot of the main Greek/Roman myths (Proserpina/Narcissus/Echo/Pandora's Box etc) - it's now published as Tales of Ancient Greece. A really accessible starting point.

GrimmaTheNome · 12/11/2010 10:25

I've still got that Enid Blyton, or similar (think its called Tales of Long Ago) - it had quite a few Sinbad the Sailor stories as well as myths, and rather lovely illustrations.

lalalonglegs · 12/11/2010 10:27

Yes, you're right - I wish I still had mine. It gave me a really good grounding in the Classics which I was still using when I went to university to read English Blush. I would never have found out about those stories without it.

Jux · 12/11/2010 11:04

DD loved this one and reads it still. Fab pics too.

gegs73 · 12/11/2010 14:23

DS1 loves Helping Hercules by Francesca Simon, the lady who wrote Horrid Henry. We also had an audio book of it from the library for awhile.

MrsDaffodill · 12/11/2010 16:33

Some great ideas - thank you all.
