Learning Key Words...

Is there a way to make learning key words more interesting? My youngest is currently in Reception and learning them slowly but I'd love to make the process more interesting for both of us (especially for me who is doing it for the third time)!!

I saw Jim Rose speak last week. He said that the teaching of phonics was important but not sufficient regarding the teaching of reading. He also said that he'd like to do away with whoever it was that attached the word 'synthetic' to phonics. Grin

...actually I think his words were that phonics were essential but not sufficient

I heard him too. I think he meant that once you can read the words you need to understand them. In other words, phonics is for reading the words, but you need language comprehension too, in order to understand what you read.

I know what he means about the word 'synthetic'. It puts people off because they think it means 'artificial'. In fact it means phonics where you put the sounds together - synthesise them. I think we're stuck with the word 'synthetic'.

c0rns1lk of course phonics isn't the end of learning to read it is just the beginning. Children need to develop fluency and comprehension and a host of other skills that we use as adult readers and of course these need to e taught but learning lists of words isn't essential or necessary.

But how do you know she's learnt them? I mean how do you know she can distinguish between 'and' and 'ant'?

context, and the different letter at the end? it's a game, not an entire reading scheme. phonics are great too - but already commented on!

TeacherElizabeth I wondered whether there were any otherMNers there! There was a woman near me with a Boden mac so that set me off. Grin

Mrz ...Well it worked with my dd's they are now 9 and 10 and are both prolific readers.

I suppose that's why the government revised it mollymax because they found it so successful
