Is it normal for parents to have to sort there child's costume themselves??

Not a problem just wondered what the standered procedure was.

DS is in reception BTW

At our school, generally, yes.

Find a Yr1 parent and ask them. It depends on the school. Ours has a stash of Nativity costumes that they bring out each year. But the KS1 play is on a different theme each year so we tend to get asked to do something along the lines of "send her in all in black, we're making a cat mask and tail with her".

In schools in general, yes, it's pretty normal.

At DS's school the school had a stash of costumes and sorted them all out and I love them for it as it made my life so much easier.

Varies with schools - some have had to limit the scope for, sorry here, parental one-upmanship and have stocks of costumes in-house they recycle every year (my old school had to ban wings from angels purely because there wasn't the space on the stage for them). Evil head made me iron fifty arsing costumes - I don't even iron my own clothes unless absolutely necessary - I still bear a grudge five years on!

Other places I've worked have asked for base clothes of certain colours and made tabards/hats to finish the costumes off uniformly.

Other places - parents do the lot. Depends what the school has already available, storage space they've had to keep costumes etc.

I've just bought a shepherd's costume on ebay too Blush It was cheaper than buying the material to make one and I didn't have anything suitable.

We have to provide costumes for our DC, this year I have a pig and a dog as well as the shepherd.

oh domestic i am so glad i am not the one Smile

Feel for you so glad i just have the one

What makes it even worse is the fact that I help run the craft club at school and so spend a lot of time teaching children to sew! Blush

But the ebay outfit was a bargain and was cheaper than buying the material I would have needed let alone factoring in the time spent making it.

DS2's dog outfit is being converted from a black sheep one which I made a couple of years ago. DD is the (bossy) mother pig so her outfit is a pink tabard which she has already, a headscarf Hilda Ogden style with ears poking out and a snout.

Last year I had to make Jack Frost for DS1 so this year is actually easier!

Our school doesn't allow the parents to buy costumes - they insist we make our own - drives me bonkers. After you've bought all the fabric and bit & pieces it always costs more than a bought one and you end up spending ages on the bloody thing and it looks really crap because I have no domestic skills - someone in the school has been watching too much Kirsty Allsop!

crazymum53 · 10/11/2010 16:13

At my dds school they have a set of nativity costumes which are used every year so parents do not need to supply costumes.

mollymax · 10/11/2010 16:21

The christmas costume is only the start of it.
There is Ancient Greek day...
Tudor day....
And don't get me started on World book Day Grin

Depends what year, in dd's school. Y1 a few of us did some simple seams for angels' costumes - in Reception they just had to wear something grey, black, white or brown to be donkeys etc. and made masks at school.

Y2 get all the juicy parts so I imagine there are costumes to be made, but dd is a Narrator and can wear a party dress Smile

SparklingExplosionGoldBrass · 10/11/2010 16:25

At ours the school supplies them.
I must admit they would get nowhere expecting me to make a costume, I would tell them not to be bloody daft and buy one off ebay.
