Levels of KS2

We live abroad and only just recently started attending a British curriculum school. We are a little confused with the terms KS1 & 2 and the levels 2a, 2b, 2c as we have always followed as International curriculum. Could anyone please break it down for us. If a child is in Year 3 what should her/his level be at the beginning and at the end of the school year.
Thank you so much

The levels are only officially given at the end of Yr 2 (end of Infants) and Yr 6(end of Juniors)

The average child should attain a level 2 at KS1 and level 4 at KS2. An above average child can get up to level 3 in KS1 and level 5 in KS2.

Difficult to say what level they should be at at the end of Yr 3. In order to achieve the 2 levels progress between KS1 and KS2 you need to go up a level every 2 years. There are 3 sublevels per level (i.e. 1a,1b,1c and 2a,2b,2c and 3a,3b,3c etc..) so the average child is supposed to go up 3 sublevels in those 2 yrs or 1.5 sublevels a year.

BUT lots of schools don't tell you the levels in anything except Yr 2 and Yr 6 and learning is not linear, and it is common to make little progress in Yrs 3 and 4 but loads in Yrs 5 and 6 or for a child to make lots of progress in one subject and not another. Also, in our school we try to achieve 2 sub levels a yr so 8 sub levels in total rather than the expected 6 levels so schools can and do vary their targets for the end of each year.

I hope that makes sense. I am sure somebody will come along and elabourate or give a different experience but these are the basics.

KS1 are years 1 - 2, and KS2 are years 3 - 6.
