Education City Quizes

How accurate are the NC level given as results of the Education City quizes??

DS just did a numeracy one unaided and came out a 2B. Was told at parents evening 2 weeks ago he came up a 1A and she had just assessed him as a 2C.

I then went through it with him - didn't give answers but got him to think about the question and he got 2A Grin

Obviously no prompting in his SATS tho which I am aware of.

Thanks for replying.

I think they are generous with their marking.

Also, a child often performs much better with someone sat with them as that person ill nt just read the question, but will make a child think harder about it and not just give the first answer they arrive at.

Thats what I thought about the 2A.

But the first time he did it alone and got a 2B. It was only 50% correct so guess it is similar to a SATS paper??

SATs are a mixture of multiple choice and written/drawn answers. I use education city with my class but as a consolidation tool to their learning rather than analysis. Most likely to use in a plenary or starter to be honest as it's more subject knowledge than teaching skill.

I wouldn't personally take the level as a be all or end all but I would take it into consideration as some children work on the computer better than on paper, especially these colourful, lively programmes vs white paper with black ink.

It might be that he is showing potential to be a higher achiever (would need to know year group for that) or a surge in learning.

It's a great site to get their enthusiam going which is a good thing!

He is 6.2 and in year 2. He came up from year 1 a 1A and was told he did a test before 1/2 term and got 100% and she assessed him as a 2c, which I thought was very good. Just wondered wether it was possible he could actually be a 2b now?? Just seemed a little high iyswim, so wondered on the accurracy.

They get Ed City as 'homework'. He normally gets about 90-100% on the maths tasks and about 50-60% on the literacy.

This was the first test he has had and done.

Sounds like he's on the move upwards, but to get a solid level he would need to display it in all areas of learning in numeracy so if it's a first and only it maybe too soon to say as a definate.

Keep going as it sounds like he's enjoying the tasks!

mumbar · 01/11/2010 20:50

He loves them and never thought I'd see the day DS got excited about doing a quiz and actually sit and do it 1/2 hour. I didn't mention score to him just did it with him a 2nd time and when we got to the ones he'd got wrong, I'd ask him what he thought he should do, prompt etc. He didn't get them all right as I didn't give him the answer or try to teach it to him as no point. He did then get the 2A score. I would think this indicates when he has his teaher assessed SATS he'll manage at least National Average?

Now if I could just teach him to write Grin Wink

Let him keep making the progress he makes and that he's enjoying it, it sounds like he's on the rght track. That will be far more beneficial for him, he's got another 16 years at school!

Good luck with it all!

mumbar · 01/11/2010 21:09

Thanks, I wasn't worried as I thought he was doing well already, was actually shocked at how high the level came out.

He's enjoying school which is pretty much what I aksed at parents evening so that really is the only thing I can worry about atm. I always think if they enjoy it, they'll work hard and therefore do the best they can. And I can't and won't ask more of him than that.

Thanks round.

Good for you, I hope he carries on enjoying and progressing, sounds like you have the right attitude!

Get in the magazines/comic strips or whatever is his fav tv show in a book to help with the writing. The more enthusiastic he is about book the more it filters over to the writing in my experiance.

mumbar · 01/11/2010 21:41

Thanks, I'll try that. He loves Train magazines so will look out for some more child friendly ones. Thomas Tank perhaps?

I've started leaving him post its saying things like I love you, what do you want for dinner and he has started leaving ones for me, writing signs for his door etc and its the first time he's voluntarily written anything so I'm just keeping it fun and helping him see the benefits and fun side of writing iyswim. The other day he added 'cake' to the shopping list as he had learnt to spell it Grin. The reward was I bought one. Smile

Brilliant, sounds like you and your son have a very healthy home/school life balance. If he likes trains so much and you ever go and see them, encourage him to make his own comic strip or model with you and take it in for show and tell at school. The pride you see on faces when they have made things like that and their classmate think they are amazing is a brilliant confidence boost!

I had Powerpoints (I'd taught them how to use it and then they got obsessed with doing it at home!), Word documents, hand drawn comics and models with working parts made out of cereal boxes brought in last year by my Year 2's. As soon as you tap into that buzz they have for something, there's no stopping them!

mumbar · 01/11/2010 22:03

He has used an old carboard box opened it out, used smaller boxes and made buildings and stuck them on. He has then drawn a map including train ststion, airport and runway on it!!!

Your right the buzz he gets from explaing it to me is amazing. I'm just learning how to do power points so that could be something we do together Smile

Cheers for the advice.
