Question about this stage in Y2

My Y2 DC is doing ok, middle of the road. Trying to encourage interests at home. Just musing really. At parents evening told no problems, middle of the road etc. When I asked the teacher if there was anything I could do at home to encourage etc, targets? They smiled and said 'not really'. Am I being unreasonable in hoping for more than this? I've no real ideas of weaknesses.

Well if she's doing OK, middle of the road, then by defn none of her weaknesses are holding her back....

Do you think she shouldn't be middle of the road? Do you think she isn't meeting her potential?

The most important thing you can do with your child at this age is read regularly to and with your child. We all get better with practice!

It's a pity the teacher didn't tap into your enthusiasm!

There are loads of educational materials available if your child is interested but I wouldn't push it if they're not. Some children find school very hard work and don't want to do more when they get home!

Just talking and listening to your child goes a long way too - it's not just the academic skills that matter.

YANBU - at my DC parents evening the teacher couldn't have been more helpful. It was all positive first then she went on to things we could work on at home ie: writing numbers the right way round and practice telling the time as they're going to be teaching that after half term. It was so useful and as half term was due to start she had written out some helpful things to work on if a rainy day presented itself (they always do in oct). I was very impressed!

Our DC do go to an independant school and i know they are hot on teachers working together to help the parent and child but i hadn't come across it as good as the year 2 teacher.

Not sure what to suggest but if you are unsure of his abilities still and think he may benefit from you speaking to the teacher then do so.
