Handwriting practice

Hi

Can anyone recommend any handwriting practice books for a nearly 9 year old boy? His writing isn't that bad - it's joined up, and (mostly!) legible, but fairly small. Sometimes he's in such a rush to get things down on paper that it ends up quite messy and a little tricky to read. When their handwriting is good enough, they are given a pen to use, and he's desperate to get one! Any ideas gratefully received!

I don't but would love some advice. My DS handwriting is quite bad, as is his spelling. He just started private tuition this morning, I'm hoping this may help.

make your own?

you can download a dotty script font from

here - look for print clearly and learning curve.

then you plonk it into word..and your DS can practice writing whatever you think he may be interested in (or possibly make them up himself..). i would always add some pictures too.

or have a google for..
worksheets like these? probs too easy

although perhaps not entirely relevant, we also do e.g letter-shape kung-fu to make learning writing more fun. (stand like Jet Li, swirl arm round yelling 'o!' for O etc)

Ha! How fab, my DS will love that - I'll print it off and we'll have a go - maybe not tonight, we've dressing up to do!

If you use dotty letters please make sure you are with your child and they aren't just joining the dots as this is one of the main reasons children develop and retain bad letter formation.

It is important that children are taught where each letter begins, the direction and correct sequence of movements .

I would always recommended lined handwriting paper over dots

is there a template for lined H/wr paper anywhere mrz ?

i did have a look but my version of word didn't seem to do it as a format.

i agree that you need to make sure they learn where to start and finish each letter, i think you can put little numbers and arrows on the text using the 'insert' menu
