Practising Handwriting

We have been told DC needs to practise his handwriting Anyone know any good website that arent just print off sheets (although they will do for a start!) that practice the right style of writing, but in a fun way?

Also, what is the 'font' called that they teach these days?

Cant help with websites but I believe most schools use a font called Sassoon primary - which unfortunately you have to pay for.

I wouldn't print off sheets better to use handwriting paper (you know the kind with the dotted lines to show where small letters go and a line to show where tall letters end and underline loops end.

He needs you to sit with him to ensure letters start in the correct place and he uses the correct sequence of movements (anticlockwise for a c d g o q s)

How old is he?

Mrz, I think this writing paper should be good for learning how to write in big and small letters www.activityvillage.co.uk/Handwriting_black_small.pdf

My DS does not write in between the lines. I think now he has a better idea where and how to write.

mrz · 22/10/2010 17:55

Octavia it's very similar to the paper I use and I also use to this

Thanks for the replies.

I will definitely sit with him and teach him the way to write the letters. He currently does his lower case 'i' with a bubble for the dot connected to the stick. NO idea where he got that from! Confused (I dont do bubbles on my i's, nor does anyone I know!)

He is five. Does anyone know a link to examples of the font?

Jolly Phonics teach handwriting www.amazon.co.uk/Jolly-Phonics-Workbooks-Books-1-7/dp/1870946502/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287783381&sr=8-1

Mrs, I think that link does not work.

www.communication4all.co.uk/HomePage.htm click on literacy in the left hand margin and scroll down to the bottom and Let's write letters (right hand image to download )

Octavia the link was to exercise books with narrow lines as I expect my children to learn to write quite small once they they have the skills for basic formation

There's something called Read Write Inc (I think) that people talk about a lot?

Dd had some workbooks from Letts/M and S (oddly!) etc when she was little, where they did letter work. You can pick them up in packs sometimes from ebay etc.

Octavia09 · 23/10/2010 10:55

Mrz, my DS just tried this programme and he really likes it.

mrz · 23/10/2010 13:07

invisibleink I've just noticed your son is only five is he in Y1 or just begun reception?

Octavia he may also like this letter formation in words

bigTillyMint · 23/10/2010 13:15

He needs lots of practice doing massive letters in the air (you can help him get the movements right by standing behind and guiding his arm), using paintbrush and bucket of water outside on the pavement, chalking, drawing in sand, going over and over huge letters, using a whiteboard, using a huge variety of different pens and crayons, etc.

Teach in groups using same formation - c,a,d,g,q, i,l,j,k, etc.

You must always watch to check he is making the right movements.

When he is getting huge letters reliably right, move onto getting them smaller.
