If it is about something that really interests them, how much do they write about it? Just wondered what is normal.

You know better than to ask this question - you know there is no such thing as normal.... :)

Indeed, someone will come and tell you their child is busy writing a novel.

DD says Y1s have to write a minimum of 4 sentences .It's her parents evening tomorrow so i'll tell you after that how many she actually writes.

I work in a Y1 class. When doing independent writing the aount they write varies massively. The most able are writing 2-3 sides of A4 (biggish writing still though and lots of emergent spelling and adhoc punctuation) and the least able are writing the odd word, a sentence at most, and only with support. Middle range are writing a few sentences/

It wouldn't be beyonds the realms of possibility for a child to write 5 pages at this age - don't frgt their handwriing will be larger than normal anywy, so not like a adult writing 5 sides.

But equally in Y1 we still have the odd child who struggles to form their individual letters and who can't recognise all letters in order to write them.

DD2's parents evening reveals she writes typically about half a dozen sentences. But the focus seems to be much more on structure and quality of work rather than quantity.

I have children in my year 2 class that can very quickly write 2/3 pages but it can often be repetitive, lack good sentence structure and to be quite honest is dribble. I always tell the children I would prefer 5 well structured interesting sentences, with punctuation, adjectives and connectives than 2 pages of dribble- quality not quantity. Of course there are always exceptions and some children can write quality and quantity. In Yr 1 half a dozen sentences is a good start and writing stamina will continue to increase remember they have only been in year 1 seven weeks Smile.
