What bits of Primary school curriculum do your children struggle to get?

There is a question to would love to know. Every child is different but is there a commonality between the areas that children find difficult - number bonds for example - spelling certain types of words?

Thought?

"There is a question to would love to know"

The children in my Y5 class would find making any sense of that sentence difficult. As do I.

lovecheese · 18/10/2010 08:21

Times tables. DD could tell me in minute detail about Germany invading Poland, but would struggle to tell me 7x8 quickly.

cory · 18/10/2010 08:33

would it help if you fitted a pedometer to her, lovecheese? or might a simple exercise video do the trick?

lovecheese · 18/10/2010 09:14

Confused by your reply, Cory. OK, how about if I said she would struggle to give me an answer at all.

Feenie · 18/10/2010 09:16

Do a search on homefitness, lovecheese - she is promoting a product.

AMumInScotland · 18/10/2010 09:19

Cory's joking because this OP has started or joined several threads to advertise some sort of home fitness product/service for children which involves a video and pedometers -sooner or later she'll go from a reasonably sensible discussion about school or exercise and put in a blatant advert.

FWIW there are Cds and tapes you can play in the car to get times tables into their heads if its something she struggles with - I think its just one of those things where repeating it over and over is ht only way to get those quick answers (though obviously they also need to understand what multiplication is about to).

Oh, I see, thought is was "Let's be sarcastic to Lovecheese" day. AMumInScotland thanks for the tips, believe me I have tried everything but.They.Do.Not.Sink.In. And they are holding her back with maths in general.

(Lovecheese scuttles off to look up "Hypnotists" in the yellow pages)

claig · 18/10/2010 09:27

lovecheese has she tried breaking the problem up, so that
7x8 = 5x8 and then add 7 twice
has she tried the software games at teh BBC etc? to try and drill it in

Feenie · 18/10/2010 09:30

What about something like this, lovecheese? I use something similar with my class, and it's v successful.

Fennel · 18/10/2010 09:42

Lovecheese, there are excellent mathematicians who can't do times tables. My DP is a bit like this, he was outstanding at maths and physics but never knew his times tables, and he also never remembered physics equations. He has a 1st and a phd in physics. But he is poor on the rote learning. He also can't remember dates and has poor spelling.

and one of my dds also can't do spelling, times tables, or dates, despite being reasonable on general numeracy and literacy.

So don't despair, if they can do maths in general but not times tables, they will be OK. Times tables are just one useful strategy which may help in maths, there are other ways.

cory · 18/10/2010 22:39

sorry, lovecheese, wasn't getting at you

(or, to be exact, wasn't getting at you Wink)

homefitness · 18/10/2010 23:13

Feenie since when have I stated a product in this conversation? I suggest you leave the conversation and do some marking or preparation for your class!

I hate negative people - too many of you in the world , trying to bring us all done- Plus dont reply to this.

Thanks

True enough in the first instnace because I didn't realise you weren't allowed to advertise products. Not a problem. But I know that now hence not advertising anymore. I am an educator and I am looking at things that children struggle with so I can try and solve the problem. I am not advertising! I am looking at real life issues at home and in school so I can attempt (whether successful or not) to acceralate and enhance learning potential.

I do apologise for my ONE previous thread post but spoke with the Admin and all is understood.

Feenie · 19/10/2010 14:45

Homefitness, you have had THREE posts deleted on THREE different threads.

Your credibility may possibly be helped if you a)change your name and b)attempt to tell the truth.

And it's 'accelerate', btw.

homefitness · 19/10/2010 15:28

Come on now enough is enough... A lot of bitching going on here.... But thank you for the help with my spelling. Always needed... especially when writing important documents.

Can we please just chill out and call it a day with the messaging about ADVERTISING - I received emails from Mumsnet ALL - ALL on the same day saying no Advertising and I haven't done it since.

Ok!

Now if you read my previous mention about me and what I am trying to do - that is not a lie.

Can we please leave it now?

Feenie · 19/10/2010 15:42

Hmm How is pointing out that you've actually had three deletions for advertising, not the one you allege, 'bitching'?

You can't blame people for being suspicious of you, homefitness. If you genuinely want a debate, why not change your name and start again?

homefitness · 19/10/2010 19:23

and you keep on going...... Any chance?

I mean.....will you ever just call it a day....forgive and all that...?come on - you know you want to.. shall we start again?

Glad you weren't my teacher at school....(that was bitchy)

Biscuit

No idea what you are talking about, homefitness.

Teacher401 · 19/10/2010 20:12

Quick way for 7x8 = 56, is 5-6-7-8,

homefitness · 05/11/2010 18:11

I will trying to mix the learning with fitness elements then making them into ways for teachers and parents to use as homework and brain break activities and the DVDs will be sold.
