Backwards writing?

DS has just started reception. He is just turned 5 and has Aspergers.
he seems to be writing most of his letters and also numbers backwards in his work (we just wrote the numbers 1 to 10 for part of his homework and he wrote 5,6,7,9 and 10 backwards)

Is this normal? part of his Aspergers maybe?because he is left handed?? or a sign of something else? am sure I heard somewhere it could indicate dyslexia but perhaps this is with older children...

"If a child has got dyxlexia I would expect other symptoms as well as letter reversal to be evident before 7.....

I.e. there is no reason to wait until 7 to start thinking about dyslexia if your child has symptoms of dyslexia"

That's true - my dd was slow to read as well as reversing letters. She struggled compared to her peers with reading in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Couldn't blend or break down words, couldn't keep her place in the text and would skip lines etc. Her teachers thought there was nothing untoward (i.e. they presumably thought she just wasn't particularly bright Hmm - however I suspected differently and was vindicated when I paid for ed pysch assessment).

She now reads relatively well considering she is dyslexic - in fact a year ahead of her actual age, but the dyslexia is still apparent with poor working memory (memorising verbal instructions, times tables etc) and shockingly bad spelling which is a year behind her actual age

Just remain vigilant - since you cannot rely on teachers to always pick it up. In fact a high proportion of children with dyslexic symptoms will go undiagnosed, sometimes completely and sometimes not 'discovered' until secondary school. Probably your child is not dyslexic - just keep it in mind just in case these small issues do not resolve or others emerge

My left handed dd wrote in mirror writing in reception.

She now nearly always writes (beautfully, joined up) in the correct direction now that she is in year 2.

However, her numbers are still in mirror (because a lot of time is spent on teaching handwriting but not forming numbers) and I get the impression that her teacher would like her numbers to be correct by the end of this year.

Basically, if she copies something, it will be in mirror.

(she is not dyslexic - her reading and writing is good)

Hello Felx

Perfectly normal for a left hander. DD now 8 1/2 but often wrote backwards letters - all her name bless her - and numbers for a long time.
Still made odd mistakes up til she was 7.
I was starting to worry about dxslexia as i am right handed and had never seen it before and the teacher said pls stop worrying she will grow out of it. Which she did.

It's a phase lots of kids go through - only really worry if they're not coming out of the other side of it.

I mentioned this to my dd's teacher at parents evening. She said to me that it is very common up to year 4. After that is guess they start looking at dsylexia.
