So, what are your yr1's doing in terms of reading?

What are they being taught? In my earlier post I explained that I was concerned about the pace of learning at my daughters infant school, but I was hoping you mums (and dad's and teachers!), so help me see what kind of things are being taught in other primary schools.

My daughter is mainly doing single sounds, and just this week did the sounds "ch, sh, ng". (She has known them since this time last year!)

Ds1 did all the letter sounds including the 2 letter ones ai, sh etc in the first term of reception and then they repeated them all year from what I can gather from year 1 so far they seem to reviewing all sounds again and building on that knowledge like learning alternative spelling of sounds like ie, igh, i-e.

Would it be really bad for me to say "I don't know?"

Boy is reading books, and has spellings to learn. I don't know what sounds they are doing as spellings seem really random. I

I seem to remember him doing ch and sh in reception though.

My ds is doing the same as your daughter. The school says it prefers the children to be secure in their knowledge of the sound - forming the letters correctly and being able to read and spell words with the sound.

magicmummy1 · 16/10/2010 17:31

Confess that I have absolutely no idea! Blush

I have no idea, all I know is it involves the rhino table (who are the same children as were jelly babies last year) sitting on a mat.

she's reading stuff at home with me though - sudden burst of enthusiasm - and making definite progress that way so school can teach them the alphabet again for all I care.

hang on a min

ah ok, just asked dd if she is doing sounds again, and she says yes, they are practising the ones they learnt last year in case they don't know them properly. So I suppose it is normal.

flaime · 16/10/2010 18:26

They are doing the same sounds again in my DS's class but the emphasis is on how to use them to write and spell the sounds in words rather than just reading them.

There is also a large list of sounds they didn't cover last year so it's not all repetition.

Smithagain · 16/10/2010 20:30

DD2 is in Year 1. She learned all the phonic sounds in Reception, but still finds the ones with two letters in (ch, sh, ng etc) confusing.

They still practise their sounds every day.

She is reading books with one simple sentence per page. Still quite slow and hesitant and does a lot of wild guessing when she sees an unfamiliar word, but her teacher tells me she is in the top group for reading in the class, so she's doing OK.

hoxtonchick · 16/10/2010 20:37

dd is reading short chapter books. she's much more proficient than ds was at the same stage. she's one of the stronger readers in the class but definitely not the best.

sethstarkaddersmummyreturns · 16/10/2010 20:41

hoxtonchick - do you mean she takes them off and reads them independently, by herself, or she reads them with help but mostly by herself?
Am just curious because I often read on here that children are reading a certain type of book and am not sure what they mean by that. thanks Smile

Thank you all for replying. It definitely seems schools work at all different paces. We will see what this year brings.

In class we have been recapping on sh/ch/th/ng. Individually some have been working on ensuring all individual letter sounds are known and others have been working on other letter combination shoulds such as ay/ai/a-e.

Reading wise range from pink to gold.

No spelling homework set.

I work in a Y1 class.

Sobha · 18/10/2010 11:22

DS covered the sounds last year. Didnt think they were covering them in class - but now not sure. Brings home reading book every day. Know that they started them at a level less than they were at last year so that they could see what their ability was. Spellings every week. And 1 other piece of homework - maths/general.

tokengirl · 18/10/2010 13:39

in phonics, they've repeated single sounds, done ch, sh type sounds, now got sentences using multiple spellings of the same sound (2 letter type sounds like 'or') - but maybe one sentence a week to drill it in. Spellings 'starting soon', which I'm a little apprehensive about. Chance of DS concentrating on spellings - zero. However I'm not sure on 'reading' per se.

kodokan · 18/10/2010 14:41

Recapping at the start of each year is very common, across all subjects - my 10 yr old has been doing times tables again for the umpty-billionth time since he started them aged about 5 or 6. He does get better each time (as he always does the bare minimum to pass a test each time), though, so I do see the point.

hoxtonchick · 18/10/2010 19:55

she reads my naughty little sister to herself. but the books sent home from school are easier. not masses though.
