How to fix our failing schools

Not too long ago all a child needed to learn is how to plow his father?s fields and he was then ready to have a family. Then Congress raised the bar to a 12th grade education and this was enough. Now a high school diploma will not get you a job that can feed a family. If a child sees no light at the end of the tunnel then why try at all why not have fun while you can before you hit the streets. Parents kick their kids out the door at 18 thinking they have done their part, but have they--?

If a child sees a future he/she will strive to get there regardless of the quality of the teacher. But if he/she sees not future then it matters not how good the teacher is because they aren?t listening anyway.

Public schools must raise the bar beyond the 12th grade and include at last two more years of training/education. Technical schools and colleges will then visit these schools and show these kids that there is a future and it is paid for. No need to worry about money, just worry about your grades.

If we raise the bar most of the school problems will fade into the past and our children will have a future worth working for.

Sorry, but I think the majority of posters on Mumsnet are in the UK so all this talk of public schools and 12th grade doesn't actually mean a lot to us.

Have you no vocational colleges for the over-18s in the US, then?

12th grade is what age/yr in the UK? About 16yrs?

Public schools in the UK are Eton and the like, but guessing you mean state schools?

Confused by: "Technical schools and colleges will then visit these schools"

Plenty of vocational colleges in the UK...
