I simply do not understand the commnent. DD is 6 and in year 2.

X did really well with her maths today. Could you please help her count on from 10,20 as I have noticed she tends to start from the beginning? eg. 10,11,12,13. If you want to chat about this please pop in.

I cannot undertand what this teacher is saying...DD can definnately count to 100 and onwards...does the teacher mean that when my DD counts in tens she gets it wrong? Or that DD conts up to 20 and then starts from 10 again? I am irritated...the teachers communication seems crap to me ....and there have been other issues.

i would pop in

seems easier

PandaG · 13/10/2010 18:36

I think she means help your DD to count on from ten - so start counting at 10 10,11,12,13.. instead of starting 1,2,3,4,5,..10,11,12

also to start counting from 20 or 30.

NoahAndTheWhale · 13/10/2010 18:36

Sounds like rather than counting in 10s she is counting in 1s. But I would ask her directly as that is only my interpretation of it

ForMashGetSmash · 13/10/2010 18:38

Oh right...Panda is that something that helps them in maths...I am a HORROR with maths and had terrible issues with it...if there were a form of mathematic dyslexia then Iprobably have it!

So...they want her to BEGIN at 10 or 20....or 30 or whatever...

I agree with Panda's interpretation, though the teacher has worded it badly. You may be able to check this by asking your DD (without priming her first to start from 10) and see if she does always quickly run through from 1 first.

Feenie · 13/10/2010 18:39

I think she is saying that when she needs to count on from 10 or 20 (e.g. to count on from 10 when adding 10 and 2), your dd starts back at zero again, and could you help her practise please.

You could check by popping in to confirm - not sure why you are criticising this teacher's communication when she seems to have tried to pass on something very specific which she has noticed, it seems very good to me.

ForMashGetSmash · 13/10/2010 18:41

oh feenie I know...it'ss ust there's something every bloody day and I feel like every evenin I am sorting some issue out...poor DD works like a trojan!

I have also been trying to get her to count like that...she wont tough...at least I know what teacher means now. Its not a bad thing is it?

GrimmaTheNome · 13/10/2010 18:41

I think its that initially there's a tendency to remember the numbers as a sequence starting from 1, rather than being able to deal with them from an arbitrary start. A similar thing happens with the alphabet (probably oftener) but that doesn't matter so much.

thisisyesterday · 13/10/2010 18:41

i think it means she can't count in tens
ie, 10 20 30 40

Feenie · 13/10/2010 18:41

And there is a form of Maths dyslexia - Dyscalculia!

Goblinchild · 13/10/2010 18:42

I agree with panda, but the comment is not a good explanation of what the teacher wanted.
It's counting on in ones, but not beginning at 0.
I sometimes used to count on in twos but begin at 7. 7, 9, 11, 13
Or in steps of 4 but begin at 2, so 2, 6, 10.
Going backwards is entertaining as well. Smile

thisisyesterday · 13/10/2010 18:43

oh now i first thought what Panda said, and wrote that out. then i read it again and thought i was wrong!!!

but no, i do agree with panda

she can't start at 10 and continue. she keeps going back to 1

Feenie · 13/10/2010 18:43

No, it's just the next step she needs to work on. You could help her - or not. The world won't fall in if you don't, she will just work on it in school.

Hulababy · 13/10/2010 18:45

Agreem sounds like she needs to learn to count in 10a.

ramonaquimby · 13/10/2010 18:46

god just go in and ask the teacher

ForMashGetSmash · 13/10/2010 19:55

What's the point in commenting if you're not going to be helpful ramonquimby? As I said...Ihave a big block over maths and I wanted to understand it before the teacher asked me to help....so...right back at you..."God go and be rude on another thread!"

I agree with the majority about what she wants you to do.
However the key thing is that she says

"If you want to chat about this please pop in."

I would follow this advice Smile

GypsyMay · 14/10/2010 13:17

Perhaps it would help her if you asked her "one more than", eg what's one more than 10, whats one more than 12 etc as a stepping stone. Maybe a string with number cards pegged on would help, or using small objects and adding one more. Make it more real so she's not just reciting the names.

Then you could move to 2 more than, and counting on generally.

It would be reasonable to leave it to the school but they get virtually no one to one attention and she could gain so much from just a little one to one. I'm sure having had problems with maths yourself you can see the benefits. Sorry that sounds patronising - didnt mean too!
