Group Reading

I thought I read a thread on this the other day but sorry I can't find it.

How does the following work?

My ds is on a table with 3 other children in year 1.

My ds is on band orange, another child is on band yellow, another child is on band lime, and the fourth child is on free reading, reading chapter books with no pictures.

Just curious to know what group reading with these four individuals would consist of? I had always thought group reading would be, you each have a copy of the same book and child one reads page one, child two reads page two...child one reads page five etc.

Now with this difference in ability I am presuming that is not the case.

May someone enlighten me as to what group reading is?

I wouldn't expect them to be in the same guided reading group

I was surprised that they were, but my ds says that's who he does his group reading with, and the parents of the band yellow child, were asking me if I knew how it worked, as they understood it to also be the case that these four were doing group reading together.

Are they reading to an adult or just reading silently in a group?

Reading to an adult.

I was utterly baffled by dd's table group until last week - when the teacher (having assessed and got to know the kids, I presume) moved them all around.

Is it possible your ds's teacher hasn't yet reshuffled, Whocan?

I understand guided reading to be each child reads out loud the book at the same time. A bit weird as they all read at different paces etc but I imagine the teacher dips in and out of each childs voices.

I agree with Cat64.

It isnt about the reading. It is about discussion and prediction, looking at contents, index, what the book might be about.

Reading skills as opposed to reading.

As a TA I did guided reading with a group on levels yellow, blue and orange.

Now that may explain it as I know my ds' strength is a) in his confidence and b) in his comprehension. But his weaker area is the actual reading bit.

A couple of these children are very nervous, and lacking in confidence, so maybe they are getting confidence by having the lower level reading book, and although confident child with them, not showing their weakness, as they are safe in the knowledge they have a strength over his, so don't feel threatened by the confidence.

I had thought group reading was just reading. But maybe they are using it to do all the other questions, and skills.

Thanks for that.
