Reading book with 176 pages...

And there are three of them. Hmmm. DD is a very competent reader, dont get me wrong, but these seem like a HUGE jump just in terms of stamina; She usually reads her school books quite happily, one or two new words in each one, checking for comprehension as we go yada yada; These new ones are made up of several shorter stories - Do you think it would be acceptable to pick and choose some of the stories from each one rather than having to read the whole lot? My concern is that she is going to have to spend a lot of time getting through these books if she reads all of them, leaving little time for reading the books that she wants to read.

Advice appreciated!

your idea is OK, read some of the school book AND some of her choice of book. Just accept that those school books ARE going to around for a while rather than being chopped and changed for new ones frequently.

We tend to do the 15-20 minutes per night as the school requests, and then just let her pick whatever she wants to read. Sometimes she enjoys the stories and wants to keep going until she is ready to stop. Either way its her choice. As long as she does the set time she needs then i am happy to go with the flow iyswim.

On the plus side, these bigger books seem miles more interesting.

Dd has only read her own books since starting Year 1. At the start of the year I just write this at the front of her reading record book and noone minds at all.

HOw old is she?

My dd or op's dd?

I meant OP's DD, just wondered cos 176 page book is a lot for a Yr1 child, but more acceptable for a Yr 3 child, for example.
Having said that, since it is a number of shorter stories then I would use it to dip in and out of.

Over how many nights is she is expected to read 176 pages? my dd reads happily every night now and would read a 60-90 page short chapter book over 2 to 3 nights. She is coming up to 7 now and is not an early bird in terms of going to sleep so reads for an hour each night(not school books). School reading we get a 32 page book over a week! so school reading is done pretty quickly and i more check for comprehesion. These books your dd is getting is definately going to be a working out on her stamina!

She is in YR2, 6 1/2, blametheparents I think we will dip in and out of them, thanks. At the level she is reading, fluency and comprehension are the biggies - what I mean is I would be pretty confident even in a book this big that there would only be one or two words that I would have to explain to her.
