Recommend a maths website for yr 2 please

Discovered today that ds is struggling with money addition, eg counting out five coins to make 17p. He will do 10p, 5p, 2p. Gets the answer but is wrong because he hasn't used 5 coins.

Please could someone recommend a website for him to practice at home? He is good at addition and subtraction but seems to have problem with money. I can of course count out real money with him but since they do it in the whiteboard at school I think a computer program would be useful.

pocket money, works a treat!

MollieO · 06/10/2010 10:08

Thx for the website link Majoriew that looks great.

He has been getting detention for not finishing his work. His teacher got him to demonstrate how rubbish he is with money addition this morning. I didn't know as ds never tells me what he does at school and I'm only able to drop off at school and see his teacher once a week. Seeing how poor he is at it I'm surprised she didn't write a comment in his homework diary. Sad

He gets pocket money but that doesn't seem to have helped.

I used it for grandson when he was about your ds age. He's home educated and he loved playing the game.

In my opinion, giving detention for not completing the work is counter-productive. He obviously hasn't grasped the concept so perhaps his teacher would be better to give him a bit of extra time explaining it to him, rather than punishing him.

Seeline · 06/10/2010 10:39

Thoroughly recommend this game for getting used to using money.

MollieO · 06/10/2010 12:00

Apparently it was detention with a yr 3 teacher so I hope he was being taught how to do it. Having said that it wasn't apparent he had learnt anything in his demonstration of this morning. Confused

My ds loves the BBC Bitesize KS1 website. They have a whole load of maths games including one with money. The litrecy games are fun too.

mrsruffallo · 06/10/2010 12:43

Maths whizz is great

MollieO · 06/10/2010 13:38

BBC site looks good. I like the look of Maths Whizz too but don't really want to pay £14.99 a month.

It's tricky stuff for yr2, so don't worry. It will eventually click.

I'd suggest counting money in a piggy bank on a really regular basis!

Great for treats, bribery, addition, subtracting and understanding concept of IOU when you need car park change!

Teacher sounds like a bit of a meanie to me. He's only yr2 not yr6 FGS.

MollieO · 06/10/2010 13:47

She did make me think that ds is quite thick actually.Hmm

If us grown ups could rememeber for a minute what it's like to learn something really really hard like telling the time or counting money.Grr..

It's her job to be nice and understanding to her whole class.

Don't fret and don't OVER do it with him at home as may make him more frustrated and make him feel dim.

I couldn't tie my own shoelaces until I was embarrasingly old but you should see me now!

MollieO · 06/10/2010 14:06

Shoelaces is the other thing he can't do. He has been threatened with detention if he can't do it by the beginning of next term. He has hypermobility which I think makes these type of things harder to do. Sad

He was very good at maths in yr 1 so I'm not sure what has happened.

I also thought he was doing well with his reading compared to yr 1 (he has visual sequential memory problems and has SEN help). He is now about a term and a half behind where he should be which is a fantastic improvement. I mentioned that to his teacher and all she said was that he is a 'long way' behind the others in the class. Not strictly true as I know others who are further behind.

Yr 2 does seem to be more pushy than yr 1 which surprises me as I thought yr 3 was supposed to be the difficult year.

BBC (this one ds has used www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks1bitesize/numeracy/money/index.shtml, Education City (you have to pay, but can get a 10 day free trial)

Ds has been doing loads of money stuff, and real money was what made it click. I've been putting him in charge of money a lot - esp for anything I need to buy under a pound. I get him to sit and get me the right/closest change (closest is harder!) and then hand it over to the shop keeper. It made the whole thing more real. His maths homework last week was to buy and pay for two things under a pound (obviously, we bought sweets educational and healthy materials)

That said, I think your ds's task was slightly silly - why use 5 coins to get to 17p when you can use 3?? That's just sensible imo! Detention sounds like overkill - I'm hoping there was more to it...

Iamcountingto3 · 06/10/2010 14:13

DS can't tie shoeslaces either. And has no interest in doing so. Velcro works for me.... Smile
He sounds like he's doing really well and the teacher isn't focusing on his improvements. IMVHO.

MollieO · 06/10/2010 14:24

The teacher said it wasn't detention when I asked her this morning however she did confirm what ds said - that he was kept in at break time to do his work. He called it 'detention' and being kept in at break time is usually what happens in detention - I think the distinction between the two is pretty subtle tbh.

Usually he flies in maths and it was nice to have one aspect of his schooling that I wasn't worried about. We have parents' evening next month so I think I need to toughen up between now and then. I felt quite Sad today.

Detention? In Year 2? For doing his homework but not quite getting it right? (and I agree with Iamcounting - his answer was better than the requested solution, not to mention more elegant - you may find he's actually really good at maths).

I'm really sorry to say this but - Jesus Christ Almighty. I've been reading threads this year that make me think that primary education is insane. Homework 3 x a week in Reception? Detention in year 2? What's going on?

So, if he's basically fine with numbers but finds real money a struggle, take him to the shop after school every day and get him to buy something.

MollieO · 06/10/2010 14:32

maktaitai it wasn't homework, it was classroom work which is why I had no idea that he was having difficulty with it. He loves maths and has no problem with doing his homework at all. I suppose part of it is about following rules though and by not calculating it the way the question asked he was doing it wrong.

Anyway I know he will love doing games on the computer and we'll do some real shopping at the weekend.

WowOoo · 06/10/2010 14:37

Who decides where he should be by now in his reading anyway?

We learn different things at different paces. Could be that this teachers approach doesn't suit him as well as last years.

Yes, velcro shoes rock! We have lace ups for the weekend. Hope tomorrow's a better day Smile

MollieO · 06/10/2010 14:42

Don't say that WowOoo, I am still recovering from last year's teacher. She was a nightmare and said at every parents' evening that she had never taught a child like ds and didn't know what to make of him. Hmm

I had hoped this year would be better. The teacher is certainly nicer but seems very critical. I bumped into the class TA in the car park earlier in the week and she said how well ds was doing!

As for reading they were supposed to be on ORT stage 5 by the end of the summer term and ds has only just got to that level in the last two weeks.

Blimey! What an odd thing for a yr1 teacher to say.

Sorry, I am even more worried about my son in reception now as his teacher is already being mega critical about what I would call normal 4yr old stuff. Yikes! This school business is a bit more stressful than I thought it would be.

Thank God there's a nice TA for your ds, who is clearly thoughtful and positive.
