Cutting up grapes for 6 year olds?

I have just received a letter from my DCs (year 2) teacher saying that if grapes or cherry tomatoes are included in their snack they need to be cut up as it is a choking hazard.
Is it just me or does this sound a tad OTT I mean this is a class of 6-7 year olds not pre-schoolers Confused

Shock

I quit cutting up grapes and cherry tomatoes for DS who is 13 months. We did BLW and he's quite good at biting and chewing.

Maybe I need to rethink? I was cutting them up until about a month ago when a friend with a DD the same age said she'd stopped bothering (and she was an A&E nurse).

Way OTT.

I do still tell dc not to run/fight/make each other laugh hysterically/hang upside down etc while eating grapes but cutting up...jeez.

Yank - actually I would for your 13 month old, for another 3 or 4 months

send your dc in with a sachet of ketchup for a snack

and a carton of grape juice

just to be on the safe side

Fairymum might have highlighted a good point there - that of the things that children AND adults choke on...grapes are one of the most common, rather than them being a particular risk to 6yo kids. I would hope that choking would be as rare for a 6 year old as for an adult, given that we can all be a bit sloppy/distracted with our eating, regardless of age.

I was told that it was something to do with the skin of the grape becoming sticky and therefore almost impossible to dislodge from the windpipe although I cant find anything to back this up.
