How to help dd?

I'm not sure how to help dd, she is august born and also I think immature for her age, not a great combination. She is finding year 1 tough at home she is rebelling about spellings and reading and at school her behaviour has not been great either. Her teacher said she is fine as long as she is getting positive reinforcement but hates getting anything wrong. She especially hates being told to rub any of her work out, both these things lead to tears and tantrums. I have spoken to her at home and said making mistakes is ok, she just needs to keep trying, but it doesn't really sink in. I think she has a real lack of self confidence as she sees the other children as being more able. I have a meeting with the teacher about this but feel overly defensive of dd and unsure what to say. I do see why it is a problem for the teacher.

Is crossing out any easier for her than rubbing out (less messy than rubbing if she doesn't like having the page 'spoiled')? Or (if allowed) could you let her choose a special rubber to use if she has to rub out?

Have you modelled making mistakes at home and it being ok? Try writing a shopping list - some of which you already have... ask her to check in the fridge for xyz then make a play of rubbing out those items on your list and ask her for help for what to put instead. 'Oh no, mummy got it wrong, but not to worry, its all better now...'

Then maybe make a star chart for reading and spellings done each night - if positive reinforcement work for her then this should be great for her.

Sorry if obvious suggestions...

How about a little white board for practising spellings at home? Work has to be rubbed out so you can use it again.
