this probably isn't the right board but I am greedy for responses :o

my DD, 3.3, is at preschool every day (she splits her time between 2). she never does any crafty stuff there, not even drawing. she doesn't seem to focus much and is mostly on the bikes outside. (I'm a little concerned about when she eventually has to sit down all day at school but I guess it's way too early to worry about that.)

my sensible side tells me this is fine - she does a fair bit of colouring at home, and plays board games etc. and I'm definitely glad she is such an active girl and isn't lazy!

but I can't help feeling a teeny bit sad when I pick her up and she's the only one without a pile of scribbles, glue and paint splodges to take home :( Blush

I'm just being silly though, right? Confused

it is fine

preschool under EYFS is all about the child making free choices

can you do different creative stuff with her at home - marble painting, making marks in a shallow plate of angel delight, collect leaves on the park for collages?

Not a problem. DS was like this in pre-school. Would only sit still to listen to stories, had that same sad searching through the paintings pile tried to encourage him at home etc.

He's been in reception for three weeks now and he's doing pictures (!) and they are comparable to the children who've been drawing all along.

Glad she's enjoying pre-school, sounds like its a good one

Really, do not worry, some kids are crafty (aren't they all Grin), some aren't. DD1 used to come out with loads of drawings from nursery, DD2 produced a handful in the entire time she was there; I used to worry that she would not have the patience and fine-motor control when it came to writing in school, and indeed raised this with her teacher. Roll on a couple of years and whilst she is still no great Piccasso she loves writing , anything, and has neat handwriting - and much neater and smaller than her artistic big sister!

thanks :)

that's reassuring. the funny thing is, until she started there she was just randomly scribbling but I think seeing the older kids has inspired her, at home she is now drawing recognisable objects and colouring neatly etc. she just doesn't want to do it at school! she does sit nicely for carpet time etc though.

1st 4 terms at preschool boy did almost no "craft" unless coerced ( like christmas cards), now in his last term hes daubing and smearing a couple of times a week.

DD1, when she was a similar age to your DD wasn't that bothered about painting etc. whilst at nursery even though she's always quite liked 'craft'. To her, nursery seemed to represent opportunities she didn't have at home e.g. taking the register. Whlst her friends would bring home paintings DD1 would bring home.... felt-tip ticked registers Hmm.

I don't think it shows that both her parents are teachers......
