She is Yr2, a real bookworm and is ploughing through her books at a rate of knots. With Christmas coming I thought I'd stock up.

Any ideas of some nice books to get?

DS2 is a year 2 bookworm too. His current favourites include:

Roald Dahl (especially Matilda)
Terry Deary's Roman Tales
Mr Gum
Dick King Smith (especially The Sheep Pig)

Hope that helps.

My dd1 is a yr2 gold level bookworm too!

She has been reading the following:

Roald Dahl (the Twits, George's, Esio Trot - the shorter novels)

Jill Tomlinson - The Cat who wanted to go Home, The Owl who was afraid of the Dark etc

Errrr.... Magic Kitty series Hmm Grin

emilyprentiss · 30/09/2010 21:22

what is the Magic Kitty series?
Can't seem to find it on Amazon and it sounds right up DD's alley (after all, there are only so many Rainbow Fairies titles in the world Hmm)

TheBolter · 30/09/2010 22:07

Oh sorry , Magic Kitten. And Magic Puppy. Enjoy Grin

Hulababy · 30/09/2010 22:10

Daisy and The Trouble With... series of books by Kew Gray. Funny little books written as if a 6y is writing it. Nice short chapters, good line spacing and a few black and white drawings.

Horrid Henry often goes down well.

From the past: My Naughty Little Sister, Worst Witch, Roald Dahl (the smaller ones like Magic Finger are best to start with) and Enid Blyton.

TheBolter · 30/09/2010 22:19

Oh yes, naughty little sister and worst witch.

basildonbond · 30/09/2010 23:39

Ottoline and the Yellow Cat, Ottoline goes to school and Ottoline at Sea - fabulous illustrations - dd loved them

also Madame Pamplemousse (she's a mouse)

Kenny and the Dragon

anything by Dick King-Smith

Animal sodding Ark - also Junior Animal Ark

Unicorn School, My Secret Unicorn, Not quite a mermaid etc etc

MNTotoro · 01/10/2010 08:04

Thanks guys. I'll take a proper look later.

at first glance, the Jill Rowlinson books look good and she will LOVE my naughty little sister Grin

The Jill Tomlinson ones are good - my dd is in y1 and still finds them a bit tricky to read to herself, but loves having them read to her. Ditto with My naughty little sister. The book people had a set of Jill Tomlinsons for about £7 I think.

Worst Witch.

My year 2 dd loves these - she is a bit beyond gold level but your dd would enjoy them if you alternated who read what page.

Also reading a Steve Voake Daisy Dawson book - lots of picture even though a chapter book.

Also, the Winnie the Witch paperbacks - Winnie the Witch books for older children with the same illustrator but better writer. We love the 'ghost in the post' story - they are very funny.

Oh - Rainbow Fairies books! I hate them. Dd and her friends love them!

lovecheese · 01/10/2010 13:21

Younger Jacqueline Wilson books here eg. Sleepovers, The Mum Minder. And non-fiction books too, my DD loves things like Usborne First History of The World. Thankfully the Rainbow fairy/mermaid/unicorn/puppy/whatever stage only lasted a couple of weeks!

MNTotoro · 01/10/2010 13:23

Thanks again :)

We have so many Rainbow Fairies books I have lost count....We also have some Winnie the witch books - both the big picture ones, and also paperback.

Will check out the book people.

For some completely unexplainable reason i am put off Dick king-smith. Possibly because of the Babe film? Grin

My DD is on gold too. She loves

Puddle the Naughtiest Puppy series
Pippi Longstocking (the Lauren Child-illustrated version is less daunting than the paperback)
Clarice Bean
Winnie the Witch

As she has older brothers there are plenty of Roald Dahl/Horrid Henry/Captain Underpants/Jeremy Strong/Famous Five/Horrible Histories etc in the house too.

I'm trying to steer away from the Rainbow Fairies-type guff tbh.

Aethelflaed · 01/10/2010 17:21

Amelia Jane
Secret Seven

SkippyjonJones · 01/10/2010 17:25

this is a good one at that stage especially for christmas www.amazon.co.uk/Rover-Adventures-Treatment-Christmas-Meanwhile/dp/1407108603/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1285950248&sr=1-3

nickelbabe · 01/10/2010 17:28

love Ottoline.

The Winnie the witch ones are written by Laura Owen.

The Kitty books are largely out of print, but there is a bind up available (3 books in one)isbn 9781405240420

Love Lauren Child's Clarice Bean,

Atinuke's Anna Hibiscus series
Mr Majeika
Humphrey by Betty Birney
Jill Murphy's Worst Witch are still brilliant
