Hi

I'm expecting a boy in Jan and we're currently deciding whether to live in London or not. All sorts of things are on the pros and cons list, but one of them is the issue of schools.

If we live in London it will be in Holborn, so in Camden LA, but on the border of the the City and Islington LAs.

I know nothing about the schools in the area except what a lady i met walking the dog told me which is that they are all terrible, which didn't reassure me much!!

We're both Catholic which seems to make a difference from reading other people's threads, and are happy to decide which church to attend based on the school, but I'm also not concerned if he goes to a non religious school if it is better.

So if any of you live in, or know the area, I'd love some advice.

St Peter and St Paul is an oversubscribed Catholic school and does very well academically. I think it's quite heavy on the religion for me but if you're a churchgoer you're probably unlikely to object. You'll have to look carefully at their admissions criteria, you probably will get a higher priority for going to their church than another one.

St Luke's CofE gets good Ofsteds and seems to take quite a range of pupils, including non-Christians so it's more diverse but still manages to get good results.

I would say the better schools in EC1 are church schools. Prior Weston is also good, non-denom, but it's quite a distance from Holborn so you'd be out of catchment.

St Joseph's catholic school on Macklin st is probably the best one in that part of Camden or Christopher Hatton, if you are within the catchment area. C. Hatton is very difficult to get into, you often have to literally be living on the door-step to get in.

I live in more or less the same area as you, and yes I'm afraid to say the local schools are pretty terrible.

i send my kid to school in the borough of Westminster and so have to commute every day.

Oh yes, there is also Clerkenwell Parocial, which is on the camden/ islington boarder; suppose to be quite a good school.
