Suggestions for spooky/scary books for 6 year old

DD is a good reader...but gets bored with much o what school provides. we struggle to read together as she gets at least one turn f one to one reading at school daily and so when we come to do her reading for that days homework she is often grumpy...each and every book she is given bores her.

The books are not too easy as such...but the stories don't inspire. Last night I thought sack this! And let her read aloud from Little Red Riding Hood which she's never read before Blushand the part she liked most was when the wolf got chopped in two.

She's fond of ghosts and monsters, blood and gore! She has always been that way and as a horror fan I understand!

What books are suitable though which might interest her? Nothing outright disturbing obviously...but spooky/scary/gross and she'd be happy. I just want her to read aloud for me..her teacher says she reads well in school for her...and that she's probably tired when she gets home and knows she can more easily refuse me than teacher.

Any suggestions or advice please?

My 2 love "What's Cooking In The Witche's Kitchen" by Nick Sharratt but they're a bit younger at 5 and 3. Not really scary but good fun HTH

Thnks Sam...We've got things like "The Monsters Big Night Out" and "Room on The Broom" and she's well grown out of those...her reading age is about 8 if that helps anyone who has older kids....what is good but won't frighten the whatsit's out of her please?

How about Mr Gum? Not scary but quite vile in a similar way to Roald Dahl and a big hit with my 6 year old DS.

Horrible Histories, Horrible Science etc? I think I read my first HH book when I was 8, but I mentioned it to my half brother (who is 8 now) and he scoffed at me and said he had almost the whole set and had been reading them since he was 6. Confused

domesticsluttery · 28/09/2010 15:54

I was just thinking Horrible Histories too, and Terry Deary also wrote some novels based on historic events which my 6 year old enjoys.

DD enjoyed the Scaredy Cat books from the library (Shoo Rayner) they're horror stories starring cats. And Captain Underpants books are brilliant for gross-out humour.

Thanks so much everyone...off to look those up on Amazon now!

The series of unfortunate events are very good books, there's explanations for the harder words which is good.

Goosebumps books are fantastic. Strong readers in my class 6/7 year olds loved them.

Roald Dahl's The Witches is my DS's (6) current favourite. We have read it 3 times so far.
