AIBU to go through pencil cases looking for our stuff???

Cos I'm sick to the back teeth of stationary stealing!
I bought ds's some really nice pencil / pens for the beginning of the school year..
ds2 had expensive colouring pencils with a triangular grip because he's dyspraxic
ds1 had a new cartridge pen (required) and lovely rubber and sharpener
2 weeks into school and they're gone!
ds1's pencil case was totally pinched....
we had this last year as well,..
Is this just our school or everywhere?

YABU to assume it's theft rather than your own DCs losing it.

c0rns1lk · 24/09/2010 21:59

how will you go through the pencil cases?Ask the teacher to check as they were bought specifically for ds's dyspraxia - should be easy enough for her to find them if they have found their way somewhere else.

Hulababy · 24/09/2010 22:00

Are you sure they are stealing them?

In DD's class the girls are forever sharing one anothers pencils and pens, all with the total "permission" of each other. Which then means when it goes back into pencil cases they often go into one another's pencil cases. But they are all te same and just not thinking to check they have their own stuff and not someone else's stuff.

Would be OTT to go through the other children's pencil cases though. Let your DS's ask other children to have a check or mention it to the teacher.

I would have a word with the teachers..how old are DC's?

I know that in my year 2 DD's class there's a trend for swapping..so you can end up with some really posh stuff in exchange for your crappy Tesco pens!

Not that I condone that kind of thing. Grin

Ingles2 · 24/09/2010 22:02

don't worry, I'm being dramatic. I can't really go through pencil cases.
Ds1 said his case had been taken out of his bag...was found by teacher under the pegs.. empty. It's definitely pinched stuff.
Ds2 said his 'friends' always take his stuff because it's nice
Sad

lol anemone
I bought ds some fab eraseable pens which he swapped for something useless. He then asked me to buy him some more so that he could again try to swap them for more junk.

c0rns1lk · 24/09/2010 22:04

Sad definitely mention that to the teacher

Hulababy · 24/09/2010 22:04

In that case, speak to the teacher. If the teacher found it anyway I am suprised tha s/hehasn't already spoke to the class/es about ti.

poppyknot · 24/09/2010 22:04

I remember in P1 someone took my pencils. My poor mum had to come into the class and ask the girl to give them back to me (I still remember her name 40 years later)

As it was only P1 I hadn't quite clocked that they had my name on them...............

Ingles2 · 24/09/2010 22:06

they're yr 5 and 6...
Is this just us then? I kind of assumed it would be all schools really....

It sounds like your DC's school needs a kick up the bottom in the security of belongings...and needs to remind kids of respecting other people's property.

Suggest that they have a word...it's not ok...especially the pencils with grips.

Where do your DC's keep them when they're not using them? On their desks?

c0rns1lk · 24/09/2010 22:12

I would be most pissed off if that happened to my ds

Ingles2 · 24/09/2010 22:18

they keep them in their trays or their bags... I'll go and have a word then.
It was last year as well but we have a new head this year and I just assumed pinching pens was common...
I'm just peed off we've only managed a fortnight.

Anenome · 24/09/2010 22:22

No...I don't think it's common at that age tbh.

Normal when you're talkng about 6 year olds maybe. Are there some kids who look like they've not been equipped well? Shabby and all that?

Maybe the teacher could start making sure her/his charges have all they need.

Ingles2 · 24/09/2010 22:31

no, it's a very middle class school..
It's terrible for minor theft though,...the boys lost match attax / pokemon cards last year before I realised and stopped them taking them in. I'll talk to the deputy on Monday. Thanks all

I'm definitely not condoning theft of other children's property but children should be provided with everything they need by their school at primary level.

In my class I provide all children with a 33p pencilcase (see through), 2 pencils, a ruler, handwriting pen, whiteboard pen and sticky label with which I encourage them to label their equipment. Every child starts the year with identical stationery and I do not allow other pencilcases to be brought in an used in place of 'my' ones. A few children bring in fancy ones filled with gel pens etc. and these are kept in trays. I do lock the classroom when we're not in it - something that definitely minimises opportunities for things to go walkabout.

Does your DS's classroom have furniture on wheels? Ask if your DS can have a look under them with a friend at playtime - all the best stuff ends up under them!

This happened to my dd2 last year in P1. She went to school with some pencils, rubber etc and ended up with nothing, at one point her pencil case disappeared completely for a few weeks then turned up empty.

I spoke to the teacher about it,apologies all round but nothing really done about it.

Then dd2 came home to say that she had found her rubber it was on the desk tidy on the teachers desk and she'd asked for it back only to be told no. Dh went in,about something else, and casually mentioned it and the teacher gave it back but I was so cross.

This year dd2 has gone to school with one pencil, one rubber and one sharpener. So far, touch wood, she still has everything, but we're only 5 weeks in so we'll see what happens.
