at all? Website reccomended by my DD's teacher to us parents...I wondered what it's like? I've signed up for the free trial but wanted opinions from people who have used it?

Is it expensive and if so is it worth it?

DD's school's PTA have funded it for the school. It's FAB!!!!

DD (now yr1) absolutely loves it (begs to go on it as her "computer time".

The school use it to set homework etc (quite affluent area so most have computer access and those that don't can use the schools computers.

The school also subscribe to mathletics aswell but she doesn't seem to get on so well with that (maybe because no voice over etc.

I don't know how old your DD is but for Key stage 1 I'd say it's great.

sorry for some reason my close brackets don't seem to have worked... user error ? Blush

MollysChambers · 23/09/2010 22:58

My seven and five year old love it. Teacher sets their homework on it regularly. PTA pay for it though so no idea of the costs.

Its £30 a year and covers Maths, English, Science, and 3 languages.

It is a good all round package and covers a good general range of topics.

The main thing is make sure you sort out which levels you want to work on with each subject during the trial. Once you have signed up, you only get 3 opportunities to change through the year, so its best to sort it out before you do pay.

I, as a parent really liked it. It was the first online tuition package I had found that wasnt overly expensive, but gave me feedback on how my DC were doing. there is a Parents section where you can see all the answers that they gave and the results. If they complete the task more than once, all results are recorded.

I liked the tests for maths as well, because it covered many strands I was able to build a picture of strengths and weaknesses. They also gave you the NC level of each question to help you.

There are also curriculum details on the site that show what each game is targetting.

I like the range of topics and the science section has been an excellent introduction into topics that DC dont/wont cover at school.

They didnt do much with the languages at all.

The topics dont cover every aspect of the curriculum but its certainly a good base and I strongly believe it has helped my kids.

Kids view - hard to get them on but they enjoy it once they are on. And, they do feel it has helped them hugely at school because when they start a new topic, they have had an introduction beforehand and it makes more sense for them.

The customer service is excellent and they always respond quickly to queries.

Me personally, I would recommend this site.

However, we have only worked on the Y4,5,6,6+ so cant comment about the earlier years.

Thanks everyone...great tip RoaadArt..I will be sure to look at the levels carefully during the free trial.

Wish our blinking PTA paid for ours! Do you mean the PTA pay for all the kids to be able to access it at home?

MollysChambers · 23/09/2010 23:29

Yep. Exactly that. It's a small school and we get a lot of support from the community so lots of money to spend.

MollieO · 23/09/2010 23:40

Silly question aleart - isn't it an American website? At least when I've tried to access it it appears to be American. If so then how much use is the English (bearing in mind US spellings)?

MollieO · 23/09/2010 23:40

alert Blush

MollysChambers · 23/09/2010 23:52

There is a US version and a UK version. Just make sure to log on to right one.

Anenome · 23/09/2010 23:54

It seemed UK based when I looked tonight...

MollysChambers Gosh you're lucky! Our PTA is so small they'd never manage that....very good that ALL the kids benefit from it. Not just the ones who will pay.

My kids didn't like it. So see what your kids say after doing the trial with them. Or rather they only liked it for a week or two and then went off it.

DreamTeamGirl · 24/09/2010 11:56

Our PTA pay for it too
We had the first go on it last night
I am assuming we have a cut down version as all we can click is 'homework' but it was very good I thought

MollieO · 24/09/2010 14:56

Is this the UK site? [thick emoticon] Smile

DreamTeamGirl · 24/09/2010 16:09

Yes MollieO

It is brilliant.

DS's school set homework via it, and DS loves playing the maths quizes live against other children.

My school use it all the time too, it is a good tool to support learning.

overmydeadbody · 24/09/2010 16:12

forgot to add, at both my school and DS's school the school pay for it all and all the children have login and passwords and the teachers can track exactly what each child has done, whether at home or at school.

Carolinemaths · 24/09/2010 17:10

I did a video review of the maths content of Education City on my maths blog. Basically, the graphics are amazing, and it's very entertaining but the topic isn't explained before the questions are asked (although there is a brief explanation if the child gets a question wrong). Also, because of the introductions to each game, it takes far longer than it should.
I'm no English expert but the English seemed to suffer from the same problems as the maths. My son turned green at the French - he's been doing it at school for a whole 2 years, but still found the accent and vocab difficult (I actually liked the French as it did teach the vocab before testing the kids)
Having said that, I thought it was great for preschoolers (better than the "Reader Rabbit" CD's my older kids had when they were little) and as RoadArt said, the NC Tests for the maths are good). I'll probably sign my preschooler up but definitely not my 9 and 11 yr olds.

MollieO · 24/09/2010 20:01

Thank you. I'll sign up. Anything that can get ds interested in English has to be a good thing. Smile

asdx2 · 24/09/2010 21:55

Dd loves it and her school funds it too (smile). Like over my dead body she has a password and the teacher can see who has done what.
