Just wondering whether your dc have brought home reading books yet?

My DS started reception last week and has brought a book home every day and gets to choose 2 to bring home over the weekend.

Yes, Oxford Reading Tree (one per week, for child to read every evening and parent to keep log) and book of child's choice for parent to read to child

We have only had library books so far and tbh I am concerned. Think a chat with teacher is on the cards.

Not yet and apparently they won't until after October half term.

mychatnickname · 23/09/2010 22:14

Some schools take it slower and like children to have a really solid grounding in phonics before giving books out.

dilemma456 · 23/09/2010 22:14

2 in the first week, 3 last week and I expect another tomorrow night. We should be getting a library book tomorrow as well.

magicmummy1 · 23/09/2010 22:15

Don't think you should be concerned at all. Our school had a policy not to send any of the children home with reading books until after Christmas, even for the children who were reading fluently at the start of the reception year. Some children didn't get books until after Easter, because the teacher didn't feel they were ready. They're probably doing lots of phonics etc in school, and you'll get books soon enough. Besides, reception is about lots more than just reading. Grin

Thank you Mychatnickname. I guess I am concerned as I know they start with those lovely wordless books and my concern is that he will fall behind. I know they are doing phonics though which is a start.

What are you concerned about happy harry?

nigglewiggle · 23/09/2010 22:21

I think you need to chill-out a bit. They've only done a couple of weeks.

magicmummy1 · 23/09/2010 22:22

happyharry, they may not even bother with the wordless books - not all schools use them.

happyharry · 23/09/2010 22:38

I know they do as I have an older child and she had them for ages. I guess this isn't the only issue. Its a combined nursery/ reception which I know is fine in principal. Just not sure it will work in practice.

Perhaps they're just trying to assess all the children first, to see what level of book would be appropriate for each child.

trainsandplanes · 23/09/2010 22:50

My reception has not brought any books home, but he is learning phonics. No children in his reception class get books, they have to teach them phonics and be sure that they know them well.

caffeinated · 23/09/2010 23:03

When ds1 started school last year he didn't get any wordless books went straight into ort books stage 1 after about 5 weeks. I was surprised because at the parents phonics info evening they said all kids start on worlrss books but it turned out they only used them if children weren't picking up sounds and blending quickly to give them a bit of breathing space.
