homwork for yr 2

My DS came home at the start of the week with homework...find a plant that grows in the winter and record data...use books,he internet or go to a garden centre but do not just copy words from the internet.

Is this about right for yr2? I know parent help is needed (which I gave) but this does seem a bit OTT to me. Wouldn't it be better to practise spellings?

Seems sensible to me

No. DS1 did this in year 1. Fun for the kids, and not very stressful as homework goes.

My DS (just started Y2) has homework like this on their "topic" for this term (the Victorians) as well as some for literacy & numeracy which are more about spellings, number facts etc. We've been given a short list of things for each which we're to do over the whole of this half of term, and hand in before the half term holiday. They aren't obliged to do all of it but will score more "steps up the achievement ladder" (their class reward system) if they do more.

Not ott at all...my DD just started year 2 and she had to write a bleddy book at the weekend! Ok..not a "book" but she did have to write 6 pages of her own version of a well known fairy tale...tis a shok after her year 1 homework which usually consisted of drawing a picture and writing a word!

Sounds normal to me. dd did a fair bit of this in Y1, not every week but whenever a new topic was introduced - she enjoyed it. Much more than spellings Smile
