Teachers - would you think this is OTT?!

My five-year-old dd (year 1) went on a school trip today. She was really excited beforehand, and clearly had a wonderful time as she didn't stop talking about it all evening.

After she had told me what they did all day, she said that she wanted to write a little card to her teacher to say thank you for taking her. We have always encouraged her to write thank you letters for stuff, but on this occasion, it was completely her own idea, her initiative, and she decided what to write - basically just thank you and saying what she liked best about the day.

It's very sweet, and in one way, I'm proud that she had the idea to write it, but I'm also cringing slightly at the thought that the teacher might assume it was my idea and think I'm trying to "suck up" in some way - I'm not. Either way, it's going to have to go into school anyway, because dd has already written it and I can't tell her not to take it.

I just wondered how any teachers on here might interpret such a gesture - would you think it was a nice thought, or would you think it was a bit OTT? And would you automatically assume that the parents had made the child do it?!

I would just tell her to do it if she wants and I would keep out of it totally. Let her do it on her own paper and fashion an envelope or whatever.

I know what you mean, you don't want to look like a loon. Not until she is in year 6 anyway....

You always get loads of stuff like this, as a teacher. I've never once thought 'This is the Mum trying to get in with me' usually its lovely to receive 'You are the best teacher' pictures. To be honest I don't keep them, but they are lovely to receive.

magicmummy1 · 22/09/2010 23:22

Grin That's alright then.

Was worried that I might have to send it in with a disclaimer of some sort - "I had nothing to do with the production of this thank you note!" Confused

I think it's lovely and I'd be thrilled if a child in my class did this - we hear an awful lot about why we teachers are responsible for the downfall of society, the economy, teenage pregnancy etc. etc. it's nice to be appreciated by those who really matter.... the children.

Year 1 children do things like this, it's lovely. Let her get on with it.

IAPJJLPJ · 23/09/2010 08:11

just don't tell the other parents as it is them who will think you are trying to get in with the teachers

Would love it!

I'd be thrilled - your DD sounds lovely.

magicmummy1 · 23/09/2010 18:17

Thanks all for the replies. The card went into school today, so just hope that the teacher had the same reaction as all of you!

Pixie - she wrote on the envelope herself, it was entirely her production from start to finish, including spelling mistakes! Grin

And IAPJJLPJ, don't worry - it hadn't even occurred to me to mention it to the other parents!

Oh, and thanks aJumpedUpPantryBoy, she is lovely. Though I am biased! Grin

That sounds lovely. I'm sure the teacher was touched.

DS2 insisted on buying a gift for the head last Christmas which he gave her at drop off accompanied by a big hug. That did make me cringe but the head was delighted.

magicmummy1 · 23/09/2010 19:30

Smugmumofboys - that's so cute! Grin I'd have been cringing too, but I bet the head was delighted - they probably miss out on all the gifts that the other teachers usually get!

Last year I taught a Year 5 girl who used to occasionally leave me a note on my desk (telling me if she had particularly enjoyed a lesson or trip)
One evening her mum said 'I'm sorry about the notes, we can't stop her'
I told the mum that they used to make my day - I have them all in my desk drawer.
