A year ago, I moved my 9 year old daughter from her private day school to the nearby sister school as we felt the school wasn't listening to our concerns. Since starting at the new school it has come to light that not only had she not been taught (she could barely add and reading was patchy), but she was also self-harming due to the stress of not keeping up.

She is now happy and doing well at the new school, but very behind the rest of the class. However, we were advised by the new school to see and ed psyc who has recommended we sue the school for breach of contract. I am very hesitant to do this but would like to see justice served. Does anyone else have any experience of this?

I would say, only consider it if your paperwork is in order. Can you prove, with reference to dates, that your dd's problems were flagged up, that you did ask for help, that help did not follow, that her problems have been caused by poor teaching? Have you got specific complaints rather than poor teaching in general? We did think of suing dd's junior school, but decided against it.

What sort of end of term reports did you receive from the first school? Did they bring your attention to any concerns they may have had? They must have been aware that your daughter was falling behind.
