Should I stand as a governor?

DD is in Year 1. I am a qualified teacher working my way through a career change and will be working shifts. I really fancy being a governor at her school but was wondering what the reality of it is like?
Has anyone done it? Would you recommend it?

Definitely recommend it. I learnt a lot, made friends, and built relationships with the staff.

It doesn't need to be much work - but can be more if you have the time.

I wouldn't say I had any impact at all on the school though :)

Depends on the school. I'd bet if it's a stable ship, it's not too much of a commitment, but if in crisis then it could be a lot more. DH is one and it's at least four meetings a term, plus lots and lots of e-mails. He enjoys it though and it's a good way of finding out what's really going on.

Yes. I have been a governor for a year and am now the chair of governors too. Great way of finding out what's going on in school and supporting them now and for the future.

Thank you. I really fancy it and think I have something to offer. I think the election might he quite competitive and I don't really want to campaign for votes!!

Go for it!

if you get in you will find it a bit bewildering for the first year but it does get really interesting.

Take advantage of all the training you can get.

Go for it, I started 20 years ago and have enjoyed it, learnt so much... although be warned I became an Ofsted Inspector because of it!

I really enjoy it, tho I def felt terrified in the first year and felt I had a lot to learn, but then if you are a teacher some of the things that I needed to learn you will know already
