How much pocket money would you give on a school trip?

Just curious really, school said they could take 'a small amount' and wondered what others would consider this to be?

If its a day trip our school usually suggest £1 but some often take £5, I usually offer £1 and a bit of change.

ZZZenAgain · 19/09/2010 00:10

what age?

scurryfunge · 19/09/2010 00:12

Depends on the length of the length of the trip and how old they are. My DS' school set a limit of £200 for a week ski trip. I think it was excessive as all activities and food were paid for.

Ponders · 19/09/2010 00:13

need age (& destination) before answering

eg 8-yr-old at local museum v different from 15-yr-old in Paris Wink

Ceolas · 19/09/2010 00:13

Usually our (primary) school states £3 for a day trip.

chixinthestix · 19/09/2010 00:15

Bit of a cheeky question really as trip has already happened. I helped out with yr 1 class. I gave my dcs £3 each (special trip to largish attraction) but 2 children in group had £15 each. I was a bit [shocked]

£15? Shock

Bonkers...

chixinthestix · 19/09/2010 00:24

Also it was a nightmare in the shop as they were only 5, could not count and had no idea how much things cost and wanted to buy everything. Didn't know whether to allow them to spend it all or limit them. And felt bad for the others who didn't have so much and couldn't understand why they couldn't have the huge plush toy that so and so was getting. Feeling Angry thinking about it now.

Maybe should suggest the school specifies a limit next time?

Glad you think so too Ceolas

Our school generally specifies a maximum amount if they are actually allowed to take any at all. £3 sounds about right tbh.

£200? Really? DS1 went to Cyprus for 5 days in Yr6 (school is Greek Orthodox, and partly funded by the Cypriot Gvt, so is a relevant cultural trip, not a jolly Grin) and they took 30Euros...

Ponders · 19/09/2010 00:40

Agree that about £3 sounds ideal for KS1 kids. (£15 is bonkers, yes)

Maybe £5 for KS2 on a day trip, & serenity's 30 euros for a 5-day foreign trip very reasonable.

I do think primary schools should specify an amount, & although I know it is a pain for the teachers all spending money should have to be handed over to them & then doled out so they all have the same.

(Any surplus to be returned to parents afterwards with a word to the wise Hmm)

At both schools DS has gone to there has been £2 limit for reception/year 1

Hulababy · 19/09/2010 09:27

Last year 8y Dd was given £10 for a 4 day trip to Centre Parcs with school. That was the suggested maximum anyway. Noone was allowed more.

Usually for a day trip they are not allowed to take any money at DD's school. On the rare time they have had money to take in it is about £2.

mollyroger · 19/09/2010 09:27

day trips at our primary school has a strict £2 limit.
for a 5 day outward bound place, they suggest £5. (tuck shop is the only spending opportunity so £1 a day is more than adequate!)

Takver · 19/09/2010 17:39

Our school sets limits - I think it was either £1 or £2 in KS1 (enough for a lolly or icecream really), and something like £3 max in KS2.

montblanche · 19/09/2010 18:10

None...it's a bloody hassle, wastes trip time and divides the group unnecessarily. Also, you always get the child with the £15, the whiners who want another 10p to buy the rubber and the children having the screaming habdabs because they left their money at school. Grin

SE13Mummy · 19/09/2010 18:19

When I lead/organise school trips I rarely allow children to bring money with them. When we visited the Ragged School Museum my Y5 class were allowed to bring a maximum of £2, the same was true for an end of year trip when they were allowed to bring ice-cream money. There is no way I want to be carrying around children's money and dishing it out so everyone has the same; I would rather they were all equal by having none and not being allowed in any shops. If I do allow money I tell the children they will only have one turn up at the till (and tell the shopkeeper this and alert him/her to the £2 limit).

DS was on a trip last week and was told they were not allowed to take any spending money at all. It was a mixed Yr 1 & Yr 2 trip.

I happily agreed Grin
