Empty number lines?

My son came home today to say he got every sum wrong, when he assumed he was correct, and was very upset about an empty number line?

Any idea what he mean/what he might have been doing wrong and how I can help at home?

Thanks!

Should he have plotted numbers on the line first and then done the sums from it? Sounds a bit odd. What year Cortina?

Empty number line is just that you right on it just the numbers you need to do the sum.
So say 26+13 you might mark on 26 then show a jump of 10 lading on 36 and then 3 jumps of 1 landing on 37,38 and 39.
The number and location of jumps will depend on the sum the ability of the child and their way of thinking.

I think it is meant to bridge the gap between using a number line for sums and doing them mentally

Thanks. It's year 2.

The problem lots of children have is they put their finger on the starting number but count the starting number as the first "jump" so if it was 10 + 9, he may have started on 10 and counted the jumps incorrectly.
