Advice needed - Year 1 reading

My DS has just started in year 1. He is not overly confident and we both had to work really hard in reception to get him interested in phonics and reading. The hardwork has paid off and he now really enjoys it, especially because he can now 'help' me read the football reports in the newspaper.

He is currently half way through stage 3 books (Biff and Chip ones), but we have done load of reading over the holidays and he is wizzing through the books with no problems at all. I get the impression that his school likes them to read all of the books in one stage before they move them up, but I am worried that he is going to get bored with reading again, as he is finding stage 3 very easy.

Is there a big difference between stage 3 and 4 books and ould I look like a pushy parent if I asked his teacher to send some stage 4 books home for him to try?

We have had a similar problem (though ds1 is on stage 5 books), but they are too easy for him. We have pushed and pushed at school because ds1 was given the "truck" books for each level and then the extra books, then the extra, extra books even though he reads much more difficult books at home with ease.

He finds his books too easy and I worry that he will get bored at school at this rate. I have started sending him to school with the books he reads at home and getting him to read those to the teachers.

We have also been getting 2 books at a time for ds1 and so getting through them quicker.

Those low level ORT books are unbelievably boring. I don't think it would do any harm to talk to the teacher and ask if he could be moved up. At our school, this wouldn't be a problem at all - the teacher would probably want to hear the DC read and would then make a decision. However, I know that some schools appear to have a ridiculous policy of forcing the children to read every book in every stage. Madness!

If the school is not receptive, then just go to the library and let him find something more interesting! Grin

I don't understand why the easiness of a book, makes it boring, the subject matter-yes
