Ideas for making learning spellings fun?

Truthfully I find it hard to believe learning spelling will ever become fun but maybe some wise Mumsnetters will put me right!

DS1 is in year 3. He is getting 10 spellings a week, and has a week to learn them. So far they all seem to me entirely at the right level, words he has been able to read for a while, presented in logical families he knows all about.

Any ideas how to make practising them less of a chore?

We got magnetic letters and practiced "writing" them on the fridge.

Sometimes I would muddle up the letters on the fridge and he had to put them in the right order.

i have always written them out and stuck them on the wall/door near the dining table so they can be looked at anytime.
we usually practice them twice and usually DH gets tested aswell.

Bribery and corruption.

For every one he gets right, a little sweet or something; If all correct in the weekly spelling test a treat from the shop on the way home.

Also do this with biscuits, 10 correct mental maths answers = a jammy dodger.

fridayschild, spelling lists are tiresome, boring and useless, and after trying out many methods over the years bribery is the only one that seems to work for my lot.Wink

Thanks! I got some postcards and got him to write out each one in MASSIVE letters which seemed ok, but that can only be done once or twice.

Especially for the comforting words on bribery. Our bribe of choice at the moment is 10 minutes on club penguin....
