Ridiculous anxiety relating to school 'mascot'!

We have a school mascot in Y2, let's call him Leo the lion. He goes home with the children who have been good or done something to merit the treat of having a lion overnight. :).

In the last week or so Leo has gone to all those children who have endeared themselves. It's been the good, sweet kids. I fear that if Leo doesn't make an appearance any time soon this means my son won't be as popular with the teacher/isn't working as well/behaving as well as the others and this isn't good news?

Would anyone else secretly share this anxiety? :)

Ok presuming that there are 30 children in your class - I would start worrying if I've not seen Leo by half term Grin

TrinityTheLonelyBrokenRhino · 14/09/2010 10:57

they all get a turn and I would guess that the kids who need a little more help to be good will get him first as an incentive to carry on the good they have done

dont psanic about it

Cortina · 14/09/2010 10:58

Quite. We used to work through the register, not sure who decided to introduce this 'merit' system. Wonder if it works like this in other schools?

Wonder if the teachers here work on a merit system..hmmm...

I suspect Leo will make it home with every child by the end of term so don't worry about it. Lay in a few lion snacks just in case he suddenly appears roaring for his dinner.

Cortina · 14/09/2010 10:59

You'd think so Trinity, but so far it's been the uber bright, very nice kids.

Leo will no doubt appear on a day I feel lousy, have work to do or a hospital appointment, isn't that always the way! :) (We have a journal to fill up with his exciting adventures)!

My (very angelic) neice's primary school worked a very similar thing - and she was very upset that she still hadn't had the toy, and lots of the "naughty" children had. My SIL told her that the toy was going to naughty children first to give them incentives to be good, and neice was happy with this explanation.

She came home the next friday in absolute tears - she had been given the toy to take home, which meant she must be terribly naughty! Cue much backtracking from SIL. Grin

Beb! I share your SILs pain.

DreamTeamGirl - how does the gold star badge system work? You can tell us here in confidence :).

Gold badges are Good Citizen awards

They get a gold pin badge that they wear all week and to write their name on a star which goes up on the wall in the hall. 2 children from each class each week, so in theory everyone should get it each year

It does tend to be the nicer kids who get it tho- which of course makes sense with it being good citizens and all...

DS did get it last year, and every time he retells the moment (which he does frequently) he was told he makes me well up again

'So I was in assembly and they said the Good Citizens are (and my heart jumped up and down and I thought Ooooh maybe maybe me) and then they said my name! And I could hear my heart in my ears and my eyes got shiny and felt prickly and my hands were shaking and then I got the badge!!!!!!!!! And Miss G said she was proud of me!! '

It is uber cute and I know how much it means to him, which I think is the other reason I want it so much for him ... Grin
Quietly of course.

LOL @ Bebs niece

Cortina, I've said it before - YOU DO KNOW THAT PEOPLE MAKE UP LEO'S ADVENTURES? Just because someone claims Leo was taken to a premiere in Paris, doesn't mean it's true.

Mine you, last time we had the class mascot home, DH was on television, which gave us a great opportunity to show that we are superior to other families Wink.

DreamTeamGirl · 14/09/2010 12:54

Thanks Cortina
Fingers crossed the lion comes to visit you very soon so you can be reassured that he is a nice popular child adored by all. Smile
But not so soon that he is the naughty child needing to be settled
And not so late that they are looking through register to see who hasnt had it.

And on a day when you actually have time for him
No pressure then

Just don't lose it! Someone lost the Dog DD's class had on their skiing trip. IT caused a lot of grief.

lucertola28 · 16/09/2010 00:27

Where I work an elephant went home with the children in Juinor Infants (4-5yr olds) was very cute, they had to do a picture and the parent would write with the child what the elephant did Eddie Elephant was his name he seemed to go on trampolines a lot that year!

BarringtonWomble · 16/09/2010 00:44

You actually want the school toy home?? Oh please trust me - you don't.

We had the school bear home one weekend years ago, took him out for the day, showed him the time of his life and omg, I am hyperventilating at the memory..we lost him.

Worst weekend ever followed; frantic phonecalls, retraced steps, more frantic phonecalls...no bear.

Monday morning, facing the class of 30 quivering lips, admitting the crime and dd 'donating' one of her own bears to replace the other one.

Dear lord I swore never again, but since then we've had another three bears from various other classes home, the school camera and a beaver. I am a nervous wreck until they are all safely reinstalled back at school.

What's more, as time goes by, the school bear, lion, walrus, whatever does become a tad unhygienic looking but I've always been too scared to bung one in the washing machineGrin
