Does your school have a garden or farm animals?

I'm planning a research project and would like to compare schools with established farm or gardening projects. I know of some great ones but I would like to visit the schools myself and the ones I know of happen to be miles away (am in Devon).
Anyone know any within half a day's train ride Grin?

Garden , Yes. Farm Animals? Only when cows break into teh school field. Made some blooming big holes last winter.

Have you looked at Okehampton College, they have an established garden project and one heck of a composter.

Is Newton Abbot near you? Try Teign School -www.teign.devon.sch.uk/school_links/school_news/farm.htm

We have a school allotment and there is talk of having a few hens on there. Not really big enough for much else though.

We grow apples, pears, plums, cherries, strawberries, gooseberries, red and white currants, marrows, tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, sweetcorn, gourds, beetroot and a few other things I've forgotten ( we came third in the local village show marrow class!) but in Lincolnshire are probably a little far to visit!

They all sound lovely Grin, thank you. I was hoping for the full pigs'n'chickens experience to balance out my research a bit.
Can you not start just to suit me? Too selfish Smile

Pigs and chickens here (both not far from you):
www.brymoreschool.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=37&Itemid=33

or

www.sir-robert-gefferys.cornwall.sch.uk/

or in a slighly different league (but good for contrast!):
www.harrowschool.org.uk/default.aspx?id=175

Try here:
www.farmgarden.org.uk/component/places/?task=list&filter=newsearch
and search on "school" for more

There is also a school farms network which might be worth getting in touch with:

And growing schools:

You'll also find local allotment associations often work with schools - so the schools have a plot and are given practical help and advice - this is something my mother is involved in (she's a long way from you, but I can put you in touch if you like).

Also have a look for books called "Pigs in the Playground" and "Calves in the Classroom" by John Terry, who was a teacher in a school which set up it's own farm, which you might find interesting. I think they're out of print now but a library might be able to get it for you, or they may be available used on Amazon.

Try St Martins Garden Primary School in Bath. 01225 832112.

No farm animals, but most of the classes have vegetable plots and there are also family allotments.

LunarSea · 14/09/2010 10:46

Just remembered that there was a third book in that series - "Ducks in Detention".

BilboBloggins · 14/09/2010 10:50

We don't have a garden, but last term they collected plastic bottles and built one of these

The schools allotment project my mother is involved in was featured on Anglia TV recently:

Thank you all. Sod research, I am asking MN for help every time Grin

The research project I'm mulling at the moment is based on first-hand and vicarious contact with nature in primary school children so this is all very helpful to me while I'm pondering directions to take Smile
