Why would ds keep being given the same reading book to do in individual reading at school?

Ds has now had the same reading book three times during his individual reading session so far this term(four times in total as he had the same one at the end of last term too).

What would the reasons be for this? It is the only book he has read at school and he hasn't had a book home so far (although we do plenty of reading of normal books so that's not a big deal).

He read this particular book perfectly well the first time round at the end of the summer. I thought it might be to check comprehension or grammar and the second time thought maybe they chose a familiar book as he'd be reading to a new person, but he says they didn't ask him questions, he just read it.

He is only five so might not have the last bit right about them not asking anything but he is normally very, very reliable with what he tells me.

Just trying to understand this as it seems a bit strange.

Are you sure he is not choosing the same book himself?

BudaisintheZONE · 13/09/2010 17:52

Do you need to sign his ready diary to show that he has read it with you? That is the system in our school.

It's being read at school not at home so not to do with the diary. So he is definitely being given it at school (twice by the reading teacher and once by his class teacher) and he is then reading it there.

I haven't had the reading diary back this year as none of the children have had books home again so far (year 1 by the way).

So either there is some educational reason or...it's a mistake??

Any teachers know why this might be please?

I think your best bet might be to ask the teacher to be honest. With ours the books they read at school are the same as the books they are sent home with. And they will get reread at school if we don't sign the diary.

We haven't had any home at all.

I suppose there might be a good reason but he is getting fed up of reading this book again and again (he wouldn't mind re-reading one of his favourites at home but this one isn't that interesting!)

Speak to his teacher - sounds like an error but it could be a comprehension issue possibly. In the meantime get him to read what he enjoys at home so he doesn't begin to think reading is a bore Smile.

Luckily not much chance of that as he's a proper little bookworm at home Grin.

I will ask. I just hate having to approach the teacher as I feel like they groan and think "oh another reading obsessed parent"!

My dd's teacher (Y1) likes children to read the same book at least twice to help with comprehension, they read the same book at school as they send home in the book bag, the teacher changes the books and says if you feel that your child is ready for a new book just tell her and she will try and get someone to read with them that day and if they feel that they need a new book they will put one in.
It is still early days of term and I know dd's teacher is still working through reading with each child to see where they are up to and which books they need (they kept the YR books in their book bags over the summer so every child has one or two books in their book bag even if they haven't read with the teacher yet). The teacher has not read with my dd yet but one of the TAs has read with her and we have been reading at home.
I would speak with the teacher and just say that your ds feels confident with the book he has been reading and can tell you what the story is afterwards and would it be possible for her to read with him and see if she agrees he is ready for a new book.

Thanks for this. It is a book he has only read at school though and has read with the teacher already and I know he would have read it fluently for sure.

Anyway, I will ask this eve as I am a bit Confused and ds will be getting fed up of it.

How annoying. I would tend to just leave it - I am sure it must be an error. Surely they won't make the poor kid read it again. If they do then say something then, but i know what you mean about being labled as the reading obsessed parent!

I think it's a case of the classic 'pick your battles' with this sort of thing. If I go in for every little problem (and there were a lot last year!) they'll think I'm a proper PITA!
