Advice needed from school governors, please

I am going to stand as a parent governor at the DC's junior school. I have a good understanding of what the job entails as DH and a couple of good friends are already school governors. However, I would really appreciate some advice on what to write in my personal statement (which will be used if a ballot is necessary). DH and my friends were appointed without the need for an election, so I really don't know where to start. What did those of you who successfully went through a ballot write?

Sorry, no advice, but I was just wondering, is your DH a current Governor at the school that you are also going to be applying too?

I just wrote that I had a child in Year One, that we had lived in the town for X no. of years, what I did for a living, and any relevant skills. It did the trick! (Although possibly I benefited from a backlash against one of the other candidates who was a little pushy in seeking votes...)

My DH is a governor at the infant school that the DCs went/go to. Thanks for the advice, that's the kind of stuff I was thinking of.

Hiya
I wrote who I was and what I did, and what skills I felt I could bring
I also said why i thought it was so important

Don't know if it worked or not as applications are open now. Smile

here is a bit of mine for example

"My job is a facilitator working within so I have experience of hearing different sides of arguments and helping to facilitate change. I am a qualified (PRINCE2) project manager, and I have sat on a number of steering groups both as an active member and as a decision former. Through this I am aware of the need to have both patient & carer input into decision making in order to deliver high quality health-care and the value that such input can add. I believe this skill would be transferable to an education environment."

Its a bit wordy, but I ran out of time Blush

Mine was: I am new to the school, with my daughter [name] having just started in Reception, and am keen to get involved in the life of the school. I am an internal auditor at [employer], where I have worked for twelve years. In this role I have gained knowledge of governance and financial management, along with skills in time management and communicating with a wide range of people. I work part-time, which gives me time to dedicate to helping the school continue to improve, and means I will be visible to other parents at school pick-up time.

It wasn't needed in the end - three vacancies and three applicants - which may be just as well, looking at it for the first time two years after writing it it's making me feel a little queasy.

I have 4 children and have had them at 4 different schools 0ver 11 years both primary and secondary and have made a few onservations about this. One thing that I have noticed is that any hint of showing off about jobs/achievements seems to be a great turn off.
Things that seem successful would be experience within education such as pre-school committee.Emphasise too that you are there on the school playground every day

Thank you all. I submitted my form this morning having tried to incorporate all your advice into my statement. What I really hope is that no one will ever actually see it!
