Think this is something like vocab, connectives, openers and punctuation and is part of literacy curriculum?

..... we saw the "less able" ( montblanche's term) children progress up to 6 sub levels in 2 terms!! so I would disagree strongly that they find it difficult. It was after all devised as an intervention programme for struggling writers....

We have also seen this kind of movement in Y4/5, but not in the lower years with the children who are unable to write (for whatever reason) and find it difficult to string words together to make sentences. This is why we are introducing the very structured RWI in an effort to embed phonics and sentence construction with the 'less able' ('less developed in literacy'??).

Have you had this movement in the lower years mrz? Like from L1-L3 in Y2?

We have seen children go from complete non writers to NC 1a in 2 terms in reception (externally assessed) and from W to a 2c in Y2

Don't get me wrong I think there is a place for RWI (or similar as I'm not a fan) to help children develop the secretarial skills but I don't think it inspires children to be "good" writers. Children need to be able to say it before they can write it and RWI doesn't develop that aspect.
As a school we have always taught the secretarial skills well but our children were "safe" writers.

One of the things I do with Y2 to encourage interesting punctuated sentences ...

We did that last week using dice - throw for a page, throw for a line, throw for a word! I found it in a Pie Corbett book. This, however, is MUCH more attractive!! thx.
