YR 2 Homework

DS is 6.03 and has just started YR 2.

He had bought home 4 books this week - 1 scheme and 3 free choice and a library book.

Also bought home 10 spellings he has to learn.

Has a big read write log as well.

The letter says to practice spellings every night and to read a book every night and sign the log so DC get a sticker. If they get all 5 they get a sticker for their chart.

Any advice on the best time to try and do this. We don't get home til 4.15 3 nights a week, 5.15 1 night a week and 6.15 the other as I work as well.

I was thinking home, drink then spellings. Dinner bath then reading before bed. I think this will work when we are home at 4.15 as he'll have free time as well but I am wondering what would be best the other 2 evenings.

Any teachers got advice about optimum times that dc's get the best from this extra support?

Thanks in advance.

ha, god knows! We fail to do most of dd1's homework and just about squeeze in her reading as she is utterly shattered when she gets in and just wants to relax (know how she feels!)

DS is currently almoat asleep on the sofa having got home just after 4, played whilst I did the dinner ate and he played whilst I cleared up. Wanted to get off to a good start but clearly isn't happening tonight Blush

At that age, if my DS was tired on evening we would do the work over breakfast together the next morning. He was always much fresher and more alert and it worked really well for us as we are early risers. Obviously this doesn't suit if you are in a rush on a morning.

Spellings over breakfast or on the way to school. Reading at bedtime followed by you reading to him.

Could try on way to school, he goes to breakfast club so doesn't really have breakfast at home. (just a yoghurt with his meds in).

The spellings they have to look at, write in air, spell out loud and then write so I guess I could do all then get him to write them when he gets home. Journey to breakfast club about 3/5 minutes so should get 10 spellings done in this time??

My DS is also in Y2 and is much keener in the morning than the evening. I take longer to get DD and me up than it takes him, so he often reads to me whilst I am getting myself and DD ready in the am and its easy to do spellings like this too. It depends how long you have - DS wakes at 6.30 so we normally have a fair bit of time.

Also if you feel its all a bit rushed during the week, try and do a little at the weekend in a more relaxed way.

mumbar · 10/09/2010 20:04

I'm up at 6 to shower DS usually 6.30 7 by the end of the week. Give him his meds then gets dressed, I make lunches while he plays then get dressed myself - leave 7.55am.

Maybe if I do lunches the evening before we would have an extra 10 minutes for spellings/ reading in the morning - worth a try I DO NOT want to be the mum who fails to do it with DC.

I always do lunches the night before, anything to make the mornings smoother. You don't need to sit down with him all the time, IMO, can you not be doing something else that requires little concentration eg getting yourself dressed whilst he reads for example?

mumbar · 10/09/2010 20:40

Could do. Think its my circumstances. I am doing open uni degree so tend to study once he's in bed so do lunches am, Also have quite severe IBS so mornings are very bathroom orientated!!!

Think I'm going to have to reorganise the way I do things - probably won't happen over night but hopefully by 1/2 term I'll have stablished a new routine.

I have taken a totally different tact. all the mums i have spoken to in ds's class say they do the same as me.
I have simply told ds that now that he is older, this is year 2. this is what happends in yr2. i.e. get used to it.
we do it as soon as we get home. biscuit and drink. handwriting practice. then spellings. then reading . then its done. then he watches tv or plays with ds2 in garden.
pain, as far as i'm concerned, but i suppose i might as well get used to it.

I had considered just that Obl.

I was thinking harsh but necessary and getting a little stressed about rearranging mornings of meds, toes splints, etc. Has to bath daily in oilatum and have double base but if I did that in the morning instead would give more time for homework. It is a PITA but do not want DS to pick up vibes from me so I think it becomming part of the routine it will become normal iyswim.
