Does your kids' school allow girls to wear trousers?

My DD is in year 4 at a junior school. Girls are not allowed to wear trousers, which I find incredible. Last winter she often had bear legs at school because she finds tights uncomfortable. When she started there this time last year I did ask at the office about girls and trousers and was told that people had tried to challenge it but that it was something that the headteacher felt strongly about.

Can he enforce thislegally?

When i was at school we had one hell of a Sexist Pig head master (1992) i got punished for a whole term for wearing trousers rather than a skirt before enough parents complained and they changed the rules on it.

I also had a similar thing with being allowed to play Football as he said 'it wasn't a girls sport and i should be doing Netball' as the best footballer in the school that went down like a ton of bricks.

Anyway back to point, DS's school allows trousers for girls Smile

Dd's school doesn't, but it's private and no boys there so it can't be argued to be discriminatory. It's a bit annoying though as dd cycles (the only one at the school that does) and the uniform straight pencil skirt really doesn't work on a bike.

Could you try her with leggings, might that be more comfortable? (they come in various different weights, so you might be able to find something that satisfies both her and the school).

I agree that it's crap though, and it would be better to change the head's mind.

oh, dd isn't at primary school either. Still annoying though.

I am choosing schools for my kids at the moment and have crossed off any school where girls are not allowed to wear trousers.

Trousers allowed at DCs' infant and junior, also DS1's secondary also the secondary where I work.

TBH I think you would be on dodgy ground refusing as Muslim girls need to be able to cover their legs don't they?

I personally prefer girls in skirts so that's what DD wears Smile but I am in a minority, clearly.

No trousers for girls at my children's state primary.

I'm stunned that schools would have this rule in 2010 - we weren't allowed trousers in the 1970s when I was at primary, and it was pretty rubbish even then (very sexist old fashioned headmaster).

If the governors/head of your schools are insisting that girls wear an outfit that restricts their activities/outdoor play (which skirts and tights do, IMO), I would be very concerned about their commitment to equality in other areas, and asking very hard questions.
