How to teach my ds how to use scissors properly

My ds (4.1) has just started reception and I saw this morning that they were sat down using scissors to cut paper. He still can't really do this properly. He is still deciding if he is left or right-handed and as a result his pencil control isn't great. I'm not worried as I know it's a developmental thing. He does play with playdoh and string beads so we are working on strengthening his fingers.

Anyway, how do I teach him to use scissors in one hand rather than his current method of using two?

Thanks

My DS (5) has poor fine motor skills due to dyspraxia and hypermobility so found scissors skills very hard. Any hand strengthening exercises like squeezing playdough are all helpful to develop appropriate muscles. Also look on the peta website-they make scissors which are spring loaded and also ones that require half the strength to manipulate. DS started with these (I just bought some and took them into school) and now can cut independently using "normal" scissors.
Scissor skills are actually very complex involving hand/eye co-ordination, perception and muscle strength so can be hard for many children. There is also a website which you can download scissor exercises but I cant remember it but just google and I am sure it will pop up.

HTH-if its any consolation, I never thought DS would ever be able to do it and am very proud of him for finally getting there!!
