At a parents' meeting at my DC's school, the teachers all they would like when children enter reception is...

  1. be able to dress themselves
  2. be toilet trained
  3. possibly recognise their own name (so they can find their coat hook)

that's it!

sorry missed out a word... "the teachers said all they would like..."

They're not expected to be able to read anything

just practical stuff like toilet issues, getting theselves dressed for pe, etc

Is there anywhere where i can find what is expected but the end or reception and the start of year 1 at all?

thanks for your reply :)

Teachers want them to have been talked and listened to. They want them to be curious about the world. They need to be able to dress and undress themselves and get to the loo. They need to know that they can ask for help if they don't understand something. They need to know they're not the centre of attention and that sharing is required big time. Those are the things you need to be concerned about - the rest will come.

My son started reception knowing 8 letters of the alphabet and could just about scribble his name. He overtook all the ones who could read already and finished the year in top groups for phonics and reading. When he sntered reception i was so worried i should have done more with him, but now i am so glad i didn't. He had a great time at pre school developing confidence and friendships, and having fun.

In the case of my dd's school lots of reception children cannot fully manage to dress and undress themselves, because of the uniform. They have a button up shirt/blouse and a traditional tie. Many reception (and Y1) children cannot manage the tie or the top button, but luckily they have very patient TA's, and leave plenty of time for getting dressed.

Nordic princess.

This sheet is the reference sheet for the end of the foundation stage which is the end of Reception.

I think this is what you might be looking for
