"My DD or My DS can read before starting reception." or "The teacher is sending home books which are too easy." Oh spare me. Children develop at different paces and if your child can read dont worry about the books the teacher sends home. Read books at home and join the local library where you can choose books which interest your child.

My DD is starting reception next week and I am very happy with her progress. Just enjoy your kids. I am so excited about her start at "big" school and she is likewise very excited.

My DS1 has just started year 3 and without realising it we have stopped reading with him, though it has come about through him rather than us. He is an avid reader himself, and when we have bedtime stories for his younger siblings he wants to carry on with the book he is reading, beast quest or asterix or harry potter or whatever... I feel a bit sad about it but its led by him and he is an excellent reader so should I make an issue out of it?I always wondered when/why it happened but it has of its own accord. He occasionally reads a bit of one of his books to me because he wants me to hear it, rather than its a set task. He loves reading and he sees me reading a lot, so I can't imagine it changing just because we don't sit down in an organised way to 'hear' him read as we did before.

I still read to DS1 who has just gone into Year 3, as Over40 says it gives them the opportunity to enjoy books which are slightly too hard for them to read yet, especially at bedtime when they are tired. I find that often I will read them something and then they will go back and re-read it themselves.

Blue Hair my DS2 is in Year 2 and is a stronger reader than DS1 (who has always been good at reading, but just not as good as DS2). But his writing is far behind what Ds1's was at that age. I am working on teh belief that it will all click into place eventually.

Houseofboys I wouldn't make an issue of it, but I hope that DS1 doesn't stop wanting bedtime stories anytime soon as I love cuddling up with them having a story!

unfortunately my sons (yr1) teacher is absolutely useless - the work books of the whole class are a mess and they never write on lined paper.
my son can barely read or write- he has not picked up a paint brush since he started in that class and the teachers would rather the kids watch a dvd at lunch time than go out if its too wet, cold, hot or anything.

i feel his potential is slipping away in front of my eyes - the whole school attitude is desperately mediocre despite a full force pr campaign telling everyone how great it is!

Confused as to why you've upped a reading levels thread from September - why not start a new one?
