ds can't be the only one? He has just gone into year one and has quickly been given easier books as he is struggling with the level he was on before. My fault for not reading very much with him over the summer.

trying not to fret as he is only 5 after all - anyone with similar experiences/advice?

God , yes! Half my class go down after the six weeks off, children really do need little and often. However I find they do pick up again quickly once they get back into the swing of things and soon push ahead!

I think that's very common - perhaps the teacher is just getting to know the children and assess their reading levels? One of the teachers at the school my dc goes to also claims that it takes an average of 6 weeks after the summer break for children to 'regain' the position they had before they summer.

Thank you - reassuring to know I am not alone. 6 weeks - goodness that is nearly half the first term!

Yes - quite normal - often children go backwards by half a term over the summer holiday. I don't agree with giving lots of homework to children over the summer, but it really is important to keep going with reading. Just 10 mins a day is enough!

Oh - don't worry! Just pick up on the practice from now on and he'll soon catch up to where he was before. You won't be the only one!!
